Review

From the reviews:

“Chapters are on the normal external carotid cerebral vessels with angiographic detail of the various vascular territories. Each of the territories are well illustrated by excellent quality black-and-white photographs, annotated with arrows pointing to the various branches. … In summary, this is an excellent textbook from an angiographic point of view, illustrating complex vascular conditions within the brain.” (Mary Sheppard, The Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists, July, 2012)

“The appearance of this book is timely, particularly as many of those involved in the development of this study are co-authors. … The text is broken up by tables, graphs and occasional colour illustrations, while extensive lists of references supplement each chapter. … this collection of reviews will prove to be a very useful supplementary reference text.” (Mary Sheppard, The Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists, Issue 158, April, 2012)

The Enemy of Engagement: Put an End to Workplace Frustration--and Get the Most from Your Employees, by Mark Royal, Tom Agnew

There are a lot of frustrated people in most workplaces today. We're not talking about the incorrigible office grump or the permanent slacker. Instead, we're referring to dedicated workers who are being prevented from achieving their peak potential by organizational obstacles. Better enabling these employees to succeed represents an untapped avenue for radically improving productivity.

Packed with the latest research findings from the prestigious Hay Group, The Enemy of Engagement uncovers the hidden impediments to performance--excessive procedures, lack of resources, overly narrow roles, and more--and outlines best-practice solutions for eliminating them. This is not an insignificant issue facing businesses today. According to Hay Group's study, depending on the industry, between one-third and one-half of employees report work conditions that keep them from being as productive as they could be.

The Enemy of Engagement gives managers powerful new insights and research-based tools for ensuring their teams are both willing and able to make maximum contributions.

From the Inside Flap

There are a lot of frustrated people in the workforce today. We’re not talking about the incorrigible office grump or the permanently unmotivated slacker. We’re referring to dedicated and valued workers who are prevented from achieving their potential by organizational obstacles.

Workplace frustration is a silent epidemic creeping through every organization—but one rarely confronted or even recognized. Frustration wears down motivated, dedicated employees who really care about their jobs but can’t get the support they need to work effectively. Focused on making contributions, they are often loath to complain or make waves, leaving managers in the dark about what’s really going on.

The Enemy of Engagement analyzes workplace frustration in detail and pinpoints solutions. Based on original research conducted by the prestigious Hay Group, the book uncovers the fact that the organizational barriers that are the root cause of frustration can’t be fixed with splashier leadership or more engaged employees. What’s needed are informed, targeted management practices that enable employees to do their jobs. Packed with new findings, a lively case study, and self-assessments, The Enemy of Engagement explains how to:

• Provide clear direction about organizational priorities to help people focus on the highest-value tasks

• Encourage superior levels of teamwork both within and across business units to help everyone cope with work demands

• Support training, development, and empowerment opportunities to ensure that employees have the skills and authority to get the job done

• Provide the tools, information, and other resources employees need to work efficiently and effectively

Having highly engaged and enabled employees leads to dramatically better productivity, improved financial results, and more loyal customers. The Enemy of Engagement gives managers powerful new insights and research-based tools for ensuring their teams are both willing and able to make maximum contributions.

MARK ROYAL and TOM AGNEW are leaders in Hay Group’s employee research division. Their client consulting work focuses on helping organizations leverage employee input to increase employee engagement and effectiveness, manage change more successfully, and enhance customer satisfaction and business performance. Mark holds Ph.D. and MA degrees in sociology from Stanford University, and Tom received his Ph.D. in management from Vanderbilt University and MBA from the University of Saskatchewan. Mark is based in Chicago and Tom in New York City.

From the Back Cover

New data collected by Hay Group management consultants suggest that many high-potential employees are also frustrated employees. Individuals who are highly engaged but face barriers at work preventing them from doing their jobs effectively represent 20 percent or more of the workforce. That’s a whopping number, and one that provides a devastating critique of workplace cultures today, with their procedural red tape, ever-shifting priorities, and persistent demands to do more with less.

Over time these frustrated employees can be expected to disengage or leave in search of greener pastures. But the vast majority started as dedicated, hardworking employees eager to contribute to company goals. What happened?

For managers who are ready to face some painful truths, The Enemy of Engagement offers a rich, virtually untapped source for radically reducing frustration and improving productivity. Written by two leaders in Hay Group’s employee research division—which partners with Fortune magazine in identifying the “World’s Most Admired Companies”—the book uncovers a host of everyday ills that plague organizations: lack of training, inefficient workflows, poor communication, and inadequate performance feedback. These are the kinds of nagging, ongoing management problems that contribute to long work hours, unhealthy stress levels, poor work-life balance . . . and high degrees of employee frustration.

The Enemy of Engagement not only pinpoints the organizational barriers that prevent high achievers from doing their jobs properly, it also offers practical, clearheaded advice for fixing the problems. You’ll learn how to ensure that your employees’ skills and abilities are put to best use, and to give them the resources they need—including clear goals and expectations and adequate information, decision-making authority, and collaborative support—to get the job done.

Everyone is under pressure in today’s competitive economy, but data show that the most successful organizations don’t meet their goals by squeezing employees a little more. Rather, they enable their best people to succeed. Now you can too with the eye-opening insights and strategies in The Enemy of Engagement.

Why Engagement Efforts Often Fail
By John Chancellor
Unless you have been complete away from the workplace for a number of years you are well aware that the old command and control style of management no longer works. Methods and tactics to get employees fully engaged in their work - as opposed to simply complying - have been the recent buzz of most employee improvement programs. Unfortunately they often fall short of their goal.

Mark Royal and Tom Agnew have written a very engaging book The Enemy of Engagement. Mark and Tom are leaders in the Hay Group's employee research division and have drawn on their vast experience to present a compelling case for what employers must do in addition to getting employees fully engaged.

The most often case is where employees are fully engaged, they like their work and their employer but are frustrated in trying to do their job. They lack adequate training, are held back by inefficient processes, are unclear about the key tasks to accomplish or are uncertain they have the authority to do/change certain things. In short, far too many employees are frustrated in trying to do their job and management is totally unaware of or turning a blind eye to their frustration.

Frustration will eventually lead to employees seeking other employment or disengaging - becoming compliant. Neither will give the company the results it wants or needs.

The book is well written and has a unique approach to getting the message across. The authors alternate with theory and a fictional case study. The case study actually brings the concepts to life. It shows in no uncertain terms what happens when employees are frustrated. They leave, they disengage and the company suffers.

One of the major culprits of frustration is poor communication. While most companies think they are communicating, one way conversations are simply not enough. Management must learn to listen to the frustration of the workers. Most workers want to do a good job. As humans most are hard wired to seek mastery of what we do. But when we are lacking the tools necessary, frustration sets in and eventually we give up.

The alternative theory chapters gives a good discussion of the principles involved in identifying and solving frustrations facing employees. There are some very specific questions managers need to ask themselves in order to combat the enemy of engagement.

You may believe that all your employees are fully engaged and this could not happen in your office/workplace. But from the examples in the book and the real world experiences the authors talk about, frustrated employees are more the rule than the exception.

This should be on the reading list of all managers. There is some very valuable information which will improve employee engagement by eliminating or reducing employee frustration.

Ideas for raising performance when resources are limited
By Stephen Bashall
This is that rare thing, a genuinely useful business book that tells us something new. Namely that all the time, money and effort businesses spend measuring and boosting employee motivation is wasted if we dont follow through and make sure people can actually get their jobs done. The Enemy of Engagement clearly explains the concept of "workplace frustration" and sets out some straightforward ways of dealing with it.

The book illustrates its central idea with a fictional scenario that narrates the story. The authors have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to create the history of Bernette Bank and the very believable characters that work in its online banking division. This storytelling is a powerful, credible way of showing what workplace frustration does to companies and what they can do to prevent it.

The Enemy of Engagement is timely as well. The Bernette story shows that just telling employees to "do more with less" -- which is what were all being asked to do right now -- is not enough. It suggests instead that businesses can get more performance out of their people without the need to spend more money or have people work long hours. Theres plenty of practical advice on how to achieve this -- and for skeptical managers, plenty of statistics from Hay Group studies that show the value of tackling workplace frustration head-on.

At 228 pages its a quick read (four hours max) that gives businesses something that's very welcome in the current climate -- ideas for raising performance when resources are limited.

How to "take effective action to promote high levels of employee enablement and unleash the full potential of your people"
By Robert Morris
Extensive research in recent years by highly reputable firms such as Gallup, TowersWatson, and the Great Place to Work Institute leaves little (if any) doubt that there is a direct correlation between positive or negative employee engagement and organizational success or failure. Seven years of research conducted by the Hay Group's employee research division revealed what Mark Royal and Tom Agnew characterize in this book as "a significant, but often overlooked, threat to both employee engagement and individual and organizational success": frustration. More specifically, "a highly engaged employee's inability to succeed in a role due to organizational barriers or the bulk of her or his talents, skills, and abilities to the [given] job."

Royal and Agnew have written a business narrative during which fictional characters address real-world issues. The co-authors (1) introduce the concept of workplace frustration, (2) differentiate employee engagement (helping employees to motivate themselves to succeed) from employee enablement (developing their ability to perform effectively), (3) explain the nature and potential impact of "tenure effect," (4) introduce a systematic review of root causes of workplace frustration and identify "key aspects of the work environment that should be focus areas for managers in understanding current enablement levels within their teams," (5) then shift their attention to strategies for minimizing workplace frustration, and in the final chapters, and (6) discuss the role of managers as "organizational change agents."

What sets this book apart from other recently published books on the problems of employee engagement and how to solve them is Royal and Agnew's focus on employees who were once actively and productively engaged and have either become passively engaged ("mailing it in") or actively disengaged and, in some instances, perhaps even hostile and toxic. During exit interviews of highly-valued employees before they depart to work elsewhere, they express frustration with working conditions (especially those who supervise them) that prevent them from personal growth and/or professional development.

These are among the subjects that Royal and Agnew examine:

o Why "top performers or potential high performers" leave
o Cross-industry concerns about supportiveness of work environment
o Why high levels of engagement do not necessarily result in peak performance
o A leader's primary responsibilities
o A manager's primary responsibilities
o How most admired companies use enablement in strategy execution
o "Realistic" job previews and onboarding
o Self-Assessment for Managers: to identify enablement opportunities
o What drives employee enablement
o Self Assessment for Managers: empowerment, provision of support resources, teamwork coordination

In 1924, then chairman and CEO of 3M, William L. McKnight, observed, "If you put fences around people, you get sheep. Give people the room they need." Mark Royal and Tom Agnew agree, adding that employees also need leaders and managers who make performance expectations crystal, explain how each individual's efforts help to achieve the strategic goals of the given enterprise, and provide support and encouragement that empower them, thereby enable them, to succeed.

Audie Award, History/Biography, 2016

This acclaimed portrait of heroism and ingenuity captures a watershed moment in human history. The astronauts themselves have called it the definitive account of their missions. On the night of July 20, 1969, our world changed forever when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Based on in-depth interviews with 23 of the 24 moon voyagers, as well as those who struggled to get the program moving, A Man on the Moon conveys every aspect of the Apollo missions with breathtaking immediacy and stunning detail.

I don't think there's a better written account of the Apollo program
By Solipso
This book was everything I expected it to be: an account of the Apollo program that did not bury me in technical details. But even with respect to the human side of the story, Andrew Chaikin shows compassion for readers by being selective. He does not list every item of clothing in the astronauts' dirty laundry. He writes like a novelist, presenting only details of interest, focusing on prominent events like Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, while not neglecting domestic facets that reveal an astronaut's character.

In other words, A MAN ON THE MOON is not a literally FULL story of an extremely technical human endeavor. On the other hand, Chaikin's book is not like Tom Wolfe's THE RIGHT STUFF, which seems to deliberately omit any mention of science and technology. When an explosion aborts Apollo XIII, Chaikin explains what happened. When astronauts collect rock samples, Chaikin writes about the geological evolution of the moon. But his descriptions meld with his narration, and understanding them is a breeze.

In this book's Foreword, Tom Hanks says that in his TV miniseries FROM EARTH TO THE MOON, he hoped to convey what Chaikin has "captured so well." For me, what Chaikin captured was the whole moon experience, the journey to and fro and the activities on the surface. From my reading, I remember craters, high-resolution vistas of tan-gray desolation, moon rocks with white cystals, moon rocks with green crystals, struggles while trying to extract bore samples, explorations in the lunar rover, and bouncy romps in 1/6 of Earth's gravity.

And I remember that Apollo ended. Christopher Columbus at least had a concrete excuse: he was ignorant. He terminated his quest for China because he thought he had arrived. But we KNEW how to get to the moon. We terminated our quest with a flimsy excuse called "budget." Now here we are, voraciously consuming Earth's resources, which will soon be depleted. If we had continued our trips to the moon, we would be consuming a non-depletable resource from the sun. Solar-energy stations on the moon would be transmitting microwaves of power.

Okay, I don't really know if that last is true, but maybe we should not have stopped the Apollo missions and more missions to the moon. We should not have burned our bridge. In his Epilogue, Chaikin refers to David Criswell, an engineer who says the moon could transmit enough power to supply all of Earth.

Ride along on EVERY voyage
By T.M. Reader
Most of the other famous lunar voyage accounts were written by astronauts and other insiders. Some of them are very good, but inherently limits the reader's experience to that of the author (and his writing ability). What Chaikin has done is monumental, in several regards.

Chaikin conducted in-depth interviews with all of the moon voyagers, many of their family members, and plenty of NASA insiders. He reviewed hundreds of hours of audio and video captured from the Apollo program. He reviewed the bulk of the already penned memoirs and documentary material. Filtered through Chaikin's sense of propriety and writing talent, the result is just fascinating.

After a little historical stage-setting, the reader gets to prep up and then ride along on each voyage of Apollo. It's not just a diary. Blocks of time and action are necessarily skipped (this is a big book). But what's included is just magic.

Chaikin is kind to the astronauts, yet frank. The reader gets them "warts and all". Great suspense (if I hadn't already known the ending, some of the suspense would have been near unbearable). The author did a wonderful job of interpreting the quite complex technical science of Apollo into information which most readers will easily grasp and appreciate.

The tale is pretty much politically neutral. Chaikin does just a bit of Apollo/space exploration cheerleading right at the end, but for the most part, he just tells the story.

Although I'm a child of the 50's-70's, and generally witnessed Apollo firsthand (via the media), I never really appreciated the role of geological exploration in the moon voyages. The feat seemed to be just getting there and back (obviously). The book exposes that geological aspect. It exposes that much of the lunar surface exploration was just plain hard work, performed by tired, sore men.

A minor criticism -- As much as I esteem this author and book, I found the lunar geological detail towards the end to be tedious and sometimes a little over my head. Also quite curious was that although Chaikin seems to be an advocate for the value of the geological science endeavors (maybe he was a wee bit political), he never really seemed to clearly state and solidify what was an "elephant in the room" issue for me regarding the geology . . . the lunar exploration results really gave relatively few answers. As astronaut Commander Frank Borman quoted from the moon, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth . . . ." Maybe that is what we scientifically learned, but no one will say it. Moving on . . .

Finally, I was amazed (but not really) to find one thing clearly missing from the Apollo story: debilitating fear. That seems to be a common currency among much of our current national populace. I never saw it in the book. There was caution, and a few white-knuckle heart-pounding moments which consistently produced proper response action. There was some even calculated and limited reasonable expectation of death. But not a hint of cowardice or unwillingness to perform.

Do read this book.

Simply The Best...
By Kyle
Ten years ago, I was reading this book. While sitting in my truck one day, I struck up a conversation with an engineer that was on the site with me. I began telling her that I was reading one of the best books I had ever encountered. She said she was also reading the best book she had ever read. It turns out, we were both reading this book!

This is one of the most fascinating books I've ever read. Andrew's writing is crisp, and clear, and draws you in to the lives of the astronauts following their triumphs, and failures. Until this book, I had always assumed that the astronauts were a bunch of adreneline junkies, with more courage then brains. How wrong I was! They were, in fact, the very best we had to offer. Brilliant and resourceful, and never afraid to die, just afraid to screw up! You will come to appreciate the ingenuity of the Contractors who put the hardware together, as well as the countless thousands that sacrificed so much for us to make the goal, by the end of the decade, of landing a man on the moon, and returning him safely to the earth..

This book will keep you enthralled all the way through! Pick it up and I guarantee, you will re-read it again someday, it's that good.....

What's the Use of Truth?, by Richard Rorty, Pascal Engel

What is truth? What value should we see in or attribute to it?

The war over the meaning and utility of truth is at the center of contemporary philosophical debate, and its arguments have rocked the foundations of philosophical practice. In this book, the American pragmatist Richard Rorty and the French analytic philosopher Pascal Engel present their radically different perspectives on truth and its correspondence to reality.

Rorty doubts that the notion of truth can be of any practical use and points to the preconceptions that lie behind truth in both the intellectual and social spheres. Engel prefers a realist conception, defending the relevance and value of truth as a norm of belief and inquiry in both science and the public domain. Rorty finds more danger in using the notion of truth than in getting rid of it. Engel thinks it is important to hold on to the idea that truth is an accurate representation of reality.

In Rorty's view, epistemology is an artificial construct meant to restore a function to philosophy usurped by the success of empirical science. Epistemology and ontology are false problems, and with their demise goes the Cartesian dualism of subject and object and the ancient problematic of appearance and reality. Conventional "philosophical problems," Rorty asserts, are just symptoms of the professionalism that has disfigured the discipline since the time of Kant. Engel, however, is by no means as complacent as Rorty in heralding the "end of truth," and he wages a fierce campaign against the "veriphobes" who deny its value.

What's the Use of Truth? is a rare opportunity to experience each side of this impassioned debate clearly and concisely. It is a subject that has profound implications not only for philosophical inquiry but also for the future study of all aspects of our culture.

From Booklist
In one corner is Rorty, a philosopher and public intellectual who, as part of a broad and provocative critique of analytic philosophy, has provocatively attacked the notion of objective truth itself. In the other corner is Engel, whose Truth (2002) emphasized the practical necessity of a notion of objective truth in inquiry and conversation. This brief and pithy book pits the two philosophical heavyweights against each other in a debate over a simple, profound question: Are notions of objective truth worth the philosophical trouble they seem to create? Addressing a particularly intractable issue in contemporary continental and analytic philosophy, the debate between Rorty and Engel is particularly complex because both men are themselves the hybrid products of both schools of thought. Their debate is predictably intense--at times threatening to spill over into political matters--but also surprisingly productive, both in isolating the true sticking points of the debate and in efficiently educating readers. Necessary for serious philosophy collections, this selection may also interest readers engaged by Harry Frankfurt's recent On Truth (2006) but hungry for a more in-depth scholarly discussion of some of the same issues. What is the use of brief discussions about truth?
By Shaun King.com
I give this 3 stars because it is not a very good addition to the literature already on Rorty, but it is a decent discussion (considering its brevity) on some important philosophical themes.

At less than 80 pages, this discussion of truth is much more precise, fruitful, and inspiring than a similar short book on truth - Harry G. Frankfurt's On Truth.

This book is actually the text of a public debate held at the Sorbonne in November 2002. The topic is the role that truth plays both linguistically and socially. Rorty has written for over 20 years on his view that the notion of truth as Truth is an unnecessary addition (and epistemological quandary) to the notion of justification within a given community.

The book consists of a main statement by Pascal Engels who, though finding commonalities with Rorty, differs with Rorty importantly. Next, Rorty responds with his main statement. Then a discussion ensues with shorter critical responses. The appendix is actually a reprint of Rorty's book review of Pascal Engel's book Truth(this actually adds to the discussion, though not much). Part of my disappointment in this book is that Rorty has addressed every one of Engel's objects (except for the one I relay in the next 2 paragraphs) somewhere else in his writings - especially his Objectivity, Relativism, and Truth: Philosophical Papers (Philosophical Papers, Vol 1).

Where to begin when discussing Truth? The point of departure here is Rorty's previous writings on Truth. Engel spends time presenting Rorty's view then offering a fairly nuanced approach to truth which he proposes against Rorty. Engel is sympathetic to Rorty's critic of truth as correspondence or the "Mirror of Nature" which goes back to Rorty's 1979 book Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature but Engel will not follow Rorty all the way. Engel says, "I do not believe that, because the correspondence theory of truth encounters difficulties that are perhaps insurmountable, it follows that we must surrender any realist conception of truth, nor...that we can totally rid philosophy of oppositions between realism and antirealism in every field. I also think that truth is a norm of inquiry" (pg. 12). Engel proposes a belief-assertion-truth triangle which turns truth from its epistemological foundations (and its ethical consequences) to a normative concept. So Engel writes, "It is therefore necessary to make a sharp distinction between the conceptual thesis, according to which truth is a constitutive norm within the belief-assertion-truth triangle, and the ethical thesis, according to which it is an intrinsic value and must be respected and sought under all circumstances; and between these two and the epistemological thesis according to which it is the goal of inquiry, the supreme value" (pg. 26).

Rorty responds, "I am not sure I understand Engel's use of normative concept. If he simply means that we should try to have only true beliefs, then we do not disagree. If, on the other hand, he means that truth is an intrinsic good, that it possesses an intrinsic value, then the question seems to be undiscussable. I do not have the faintest idea how to go about determining which goods are the intrinsic ones and which are the instrumental ones. Nor do I see the point in raising the question. Intrinsic is a word that pragmatists find it easy to do without. If one thinks that sincerity and exactness are good things, I do not see why we should worry about whether they are means to something else or good in themselves. Which reply one gives to such questions will have no bearing on practice. Trying never to have anything but true beliefs will not lead us to do anything differently than if we simply try our best to justify our beliefs to ourselves and to others" (pg. 44).

Although the discussion section is riveting for its staccato style, it does not bring out anything in Rorty that has not already been published a dozen times.

This book is small in size, large in print, and less than 80 pages. It can be read in one sitting without a break. Both Engel and Rorty write accessibly and it is a decent introduction to some contemporary themes in philosophy. There are more arguments presented here than I have summarized which makes it a decent introduction to Rorty's thought. However, Rorty's best writing on Truth is his essays in Objectivity, Relativism, and Truth: Philosophical Papers (Philosophical Papers, Vol 1).

A Debate on Truth
By Robin Friedman
This recent short book, "What's the Use of Truth?" (2007) consists of the text of a debate held between two distinguished contemporary philosophers, Richard Rorty and Pascal Engel, at the Sorbonne in 2002. Rorty began his career as an analytic philosopher who edited a collection of texts in a book called "The Linguistic Turn." (1967) But, in his book "Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature" (1979) and many later writings, Rorty became disillusioned with analytic philosophy and, indeed, highly skeptical of the philosophical project as traditionally conceived. Rorty became a self-styled "pragmatist" in the tradition of John Dewey. Pascal Engel, in contrast to Rorty, began as a European philosopher steeped in Heidegger. He has since tried to bring European thought closer to the techniques and questions of analytic philosophy.

The subject of the Engel-Rorty debate is the nature of truth and whether the concept of truth is philosophically important. Rorty argues for a "deflationist" account of truth, and maintains that there is little benefit to be gained from studying the conundrums that philosophers have erected around the concept. Rorty claims to adopt the pragmatist maxim of William James that "if a debate has no practical significance, then it has no philosophical significance." To simplify greatly, Rorty rejects an approach in which true statements are thought to bear a relationship of correspondence to an independent reality. True statements are those accepted by a community under standards used by that community whether the statements be scientific, artistic, technical, political, religious, ethical what have you. There is no metaphysical entity called Truth for Rorty, and to say, for example, that ""The cat is on the mat" is true" is, in most circumstances, only to say "The cat is on the mat."

In the debate, Pascal Engel agrees with Rorty on some important points. Notably, he rejects any metaphysical notion of "the Truth" and he also rejects representationalism for the most part. But while Rorty claims to be a follower of James and Dewey, Engel is closer to the earlier American pragmatist, Charles Peirce. Engel argues that the concept of the truth as an important regulatory role to play in human thought by setting a goal and limiting condition of human inquiry. Engel discusses what he describes as the assertion-belief-truth triangle by which he endeavors to show that the question of the acceptability of a particular statement by a group cannot be reduced to the question of the truth of that statement.

Following the statement of their basic positions, Rorty and Engel engage in a brief discussion which grows increasingly heated.

As is often the case, Rorty states his position eloquently and rhetorically, with references to himself and those who think with him as "we pragmatists", "we quietists" and the like. It is difficult to take a good hard look at Rorty's views. Rorty does not seem to me entirely consistent in his pragmatism and anti-metaphysical orientation, as he slips, in places in his discussion, into a philosophical naturalism with no place for any form of theology. In other places, his approach seems to be of the breadth to allow theological discourse, just as any other discourse, as long as it serves a human need. Engel works hard in the debate to establish the importance of a limited concept of truth, but I was struck by how much the contours of philosophical debate have shifted towards a position much influenced by Rorty.

This book is short, lively, and provocative. I think it too brief and too concentrated to make a good introduction to the issues it addresses. This book will be of interest to serious students of philosophy and to those interested in the claimed death of or at least reformulation of this venerable discipline.

Short, expensive, and inessential
By Olly Buxton
There are far better books available for those wanting a good insight into Richard Rorty's writing on truth: Philosophy and Social Hope is an outstandingly readable, engaging collection of essays which sets out his views in much more clarity than this volume, which takes the form of a rather pedantic argument between Pascal Engel, a former "continental philosopher" (believing in relativism and all those wacky gallic notions) who has seen the light of analytic truth and Rorty, a former analytical philosopher who famously became persuaded that there isn't actually a light and who adopted a pragmatist view (which is a polite way of saying he ended up believing in "cultural relativism" and all those wacky gallic notions).

Like Rorty, I have trouble seeing any way round objections to the correspondence theory of truth, so I'm firmly in his camp (wacky though it may seem): There's no correspondence between sentences and reality, the marginal utility of a statement being "true" (and not just "useful") is minimal and we should instead satisfy ourselves for descriptions of the world we find to be useful without caring how, whether or why they map onto some intangible external thing called reality.

Engel's arguments strike me as technical and implausible, since his first move is to surrender a large part of the ground by conceding there are real problems with correspondence - I doubt I do him justice, but he's reduced to saying things like 'correspondence or no, we *do* talk in terms which assume there is such a truth, and that mode of discourse in itself has some essential value and meaning which would be lost were we to relegate ourselves to merely finding sentences useful'.

I'm not persuaded, and Rorty's brilliant writing elsewhere (especially Philosophy and Social Hope and Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity) heaps grist to his wacky gallic mill.

Lastly, this book is short - it's about an hour's read, partly comprises a book review by Rorty of Engel's book on truth which is available online, and the copy I purchased was absurdly expensive.

One day the world may be turned on to (the recently deceased) Richard Rorty, but this isn't the book to do it.

Paul’s client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the light bulb and holds the right to power the country?

The case affords Paul entry to the heady world of high society—the glittering parties in Gramercy Park mansions, and the more insidious dealings done behind closed doors. The task facing him is beyond daunting. Edison is a wily, dangerous opponent with vast resources at his disposal—private spies, newspapers in his pocket, and the backing of J. P. Morgan himself. Yet this unknown lawyer shares with his famous adversary a compulsion to win at all costs. How will he do it?

In obsessive pursuit of victory, Paul crosses paths with Nikola Tesla, an eccentric, brilliant inventor who may hold the key to defeating Edison, and with Agnes Huntington, a beautiful opera singer who proves to be a flawless performer on stage and off. As Paul takes greater and greater risks, he’ll find that everyone in his path is playing their own game, and no one is quite who they seem.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of August 2016: Great inventors take the stage in this historical fiction/legal thriller based on the lighting of New York City in the 1890s. The story is told by Paul Cravath, an attorney hired by George Westinghouse to take on Thomas Edison in a battle over lightbulb patents. The setup may sound dry, but Graham’s pacing keeps the story driving forward. There are crimes. There’s a mysterious woman. There’s a mad genius in the form of Nikola Tesla. And it’s all sets against the backdrop of the glittering Gilded Age. Every so often an historical fiction comes along that captures the imaginations of legions of readers. The Last Days of Night will join that elite group of novels. —Chris Schluep, The Amazon Book Review

“In The Last Days of Night, Graham Moore takes us back to the dawn of light—electric light—into a world of invention and skulduggery, populated by the likes of Edison, Westinghouse, Tesla, and the novel’s hero, a young lawyer named Paul Cravath (a name that will resonate with ambitious law students everywhere). It’s part legal thriller, part tour of a magical time—the age of wonder—and once you’ve finished it, you’ll find it hard to return to the world of now.”—Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City

“The Last Days of Night is a wonder, a riveting historical novel that is part legal thriller, part techno-suspense. This fast-paced story about the personal and legal clash over the invention of the light bulb is a tale of larger-than-life characters and devious doings, and a significant meditation on the price we as a society pay for new technology. . . . Thoughtful and hugely entertaining.”—Scott Turow

Riveting Historical Novel from Dawn of the Age of Electricity
By Benjamin Thomas
This novel provides a fascinating portrayal of one of the most exciting times in world history, at least when it comes to scientific invention and the birth of technology. It was enjoyable to read, to get to know the real-life characters, and at the same time learn about these historical events in a non-text-booky way.

The plot revolves around three main historical characters: Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla. The inventor, the businessman, and the genius. All three men were primary warriors in what became known as the “current war”, i.e. the battle over whether or not A/C or D/C would win out in the end. In the middle of this tripod of giant historical figures is a young 26 year old recently graduated attorney named Paul Cravath, a name not familiar to me when I began reading this book but who I learned became one of the giants of the legal profession, largely due to his involvement in the “current war” and it successful resolution (depending on one’s point of view).

This is a pretty fast-paced novel with short chapters and a swift narrative style. The facts are well-researched and the author provides a welcome section at the end wherein he separates facts from fiction. There is also a nice little romance sub plot. But where the novel really shines is in how it is capable of transcending the simple facts of the events during the late 1800’s when electricity was harnessed and helps us to understand the nature and value of the inventive process. A relatively brief 15 years in our history saw not only many new discoveries related to electricity, but also the birth of new ideas on how we would go about “inventing” in the future. The notion of an eccentric lone inventor working in his personal lab quickly morphs into the business of inventing. Really, it’s the beginnings of how technology is advanced today.

This was what made me interested to read this book. But in addition, thanks to having Paul Cravath as the protagonist character, I also got to witness the concurrent development of the legal profession, seeing it change quickly from a cottage industry into a legal “factory” with Cravath’s introduction of the idea of associate attorneys and building an entire legal firm. Pretty cool.

I’ve read this author’s previous novel, “The Sherlockian” and enjoyed it a lot and I’ve also seen the “The Imitation Game” movie for which he was the screenwriter. Clearly, much like the characters he writes about, Graham Moore is a name to watch in the future.

Highly recommended!

Strong story, bread-and-butter writing style.
By MT57
I liked the story, although I think I would have preferred to have read instead one of the non-fiction sources the author cites in his afterword as his sources. That way I would not have wondered, every time a plot twist or a new character appeared, whether it was rue to the historical record or invented by the author. In general, per his afterword, it seems most of the narrative is based, at least loosely, on the historical record. There were some excellent plot twists toward the end.

The book is an easy read. The author sticks to a bread-and-butter style, with few adjectives or adverbs, that might even be called pedestrian. He does have an irritating habit of closing chapters with portentous remarks about what the next chapter will bring, in a clumsy effort to create suspense. The efforts to create psychological depth in the main character, Paul Cravath, also seemed a little pedestrian.

Overall, it was an enjoyable entertainment, decent historical fiction, not at all taxing of one's mental energy.

Marvelously entertaining historical novel about the AC/DC current war
By Kindle Customer
This book, although not entirely factually accurate, provides a marvelously entertaining view of some of the giants of the late 19th century: Tesla, a brilliant and possibly schizophrenic theoretician who cares predominantly about ideas and is a proponent of AC, Westinghouse, a brilliant manufacturer, and Edison, the giant who develops an invention factory, cares about winning, and favors DC. The conflicts between these strong and different personalities are told from the point of view of a lawyer, who himself may have been a major player in the development of modern law offices. The book is well written and moves along briskly, with an occasional horrific and apparently accurate description of electrocution. For those like me who worry about how much of an historical novel is true, the author thoughtfully provides an afterward that outlines what is historical fact and what falls under poetic license. I enjoyed this book immensely and have already ordered the author's earlier novel.

Easy read,chapters differs with editions
By Tashia
I needed this book for my professional selling class. It's easy to follow along- the concepts are pretty straightforward. The only issue is the professor said that any edition of this book would be fine, however some of her assigned readings (certain chapters) weren't included in this edition. I think there's nine editions. So if you're buying this for a a certain class make sure the teacher knows about the differences in chapters for certain editions.

Great solution to expensive textbooks!
By Marc Gallegos
Choosing to buy a international version is a great decision! Always choose international when there is a big price difference. All the same content and exact page referencing expect without a fancy hard cover edition and fancy front cover.
