About the Author
Panos Lekkas has been intensely active in the industry for more than 20 years and is currently the Founder and President of Xstream Technologies LLC in Boston, Massachusetts. Lekkas is involved in advanced technology and business development in the areas of network processing, broadband optical and RF wireless communications security, and neural computing. Lekkas is known for his expert technology advisory role for both government and leading hi-tech companies, as well as for top-of-the-line investment banks and venture capital companies. His combined experience in both technology and business development worldwide has been applied to projects involving introduction of new technologies, performing due diligence process and technology evaluation for clients, as well as conducting valuation and sale of companies and technology assets to prospective corporate acquirers. His company has also been developing a series of patents and intellectural property that it licenses and it also provides turnkey solutions in projects involving communications systems analysis/simulation/development, VLSI/SOC architecture design, FPGA prototyping, and development of embedded software.

Lekkas started his career as a VLSI engineer with Silvar-Lisco and he rose to supervise the company's European applications engineering group. He joined IBM in the early 1980s. Among several positions he was Leading Architect & Systems Engineer in Austin, Texas, in charge of processor and memory management architecture and he has been instrumental in IBM's successful worldwide introduction of the RISC architecture, which ultimately evolved to become the heart of the renown IBM RS/6000 supercomputers. Lekkas has held several positions in advanced technology development and technical marketing management with IBM in both the United States and Europe.

After he left IBM and before starting Xstream Technologies, Lekkas has held positions as CTO & Technology Division General Manager of THLC in Marlboro, Mass., a fabless semiconductor company in the area of high-speed communications security where he built the engineering division by a series of mergers and acquisitions while hands-on leading the development of the company's highly complex ASIC product in collaboration with IBM Microelectronics; Co-Founder, President/CEO of wirelessEncryption.com Inc., a Burlington, Mass. fabless semiconductor company where he invented and started developing a patented streaming communications security technology that culminated to a multimillion dollar IPO; VP Engineering at ACI, a Hudson, Mass. fabless semiconductor company designing advanced communications ASICs; Director of Business Development with TCC, in Concord, Mass. where he further built and supervised the in-house cryptography team, participating in industry-standards bodies, and having led the product definition for systems destined for military and intelligence communications including link- and protocol-sensitive encryptors for the industry; Director of International Technical Sales & Applications Engineering with Galileo Corp. where he pioneered the introduction of their WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) and praseodymium-doped-fluoride fiber telecom amplifier communications technology and where he increased by 10 times the Japanese business of the company within two years. At Galileo he had the establishment of the company's electro-optics technologies as a de facto standard worldwide in the fields of lithography, scanning electron microscopy, and surface analysis for semiconductor equipment manufacturers and he was instrumental in the effort to diversify the fiberoptics-based coherent-imaging business division from heads-up avionics displays to medical markets that revolutionalized the ways minimally invasive surgery is conducted. Before that, Lekkas had also set up and run successfully with full P&L responsibility Galileo's European branch working closely with manufacturers of image intensifier tubes (military night-vision), large scientific/analytic instrumentation, and medical imaging systems, as well as with particle accelerator labs, space agencies and nuclear weapons labs of friendly countries.

Lekkas has done his graduate research in quantum electronics at Rice University, in Houston, TX where he was a student of Nobel-laureate Professor Robert Curl. He has two graduate degrees in electrical engineering, one specialized in VLSI and semiconductor technology, and one on wireless communications with emphasis on RF microelectronics and microwave antennas. He has done his MBA work in Corporate Finance at the (KUL) Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, in Belgium and he is a Professional Engineer in the European Union. Lekkas has invented and authored several US and foreign patents in the areas of communications transmission, coding, and security and he is a member of the IEEE, of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

Together with now George Washington University's Professor Randall Nichols who was a key member of one of his previous R&D teams, Lekkas has coauthored another major textbook titled Wireless Security, which was published worldwide by McGraw-Hill in December 2001. It contains a foreword written by Admiral Michael McConnell, former DIRNSA (head of the U.S. National Security Agency.)

Lekkas has worked extensively in N. Europe, Japan, Middle East and Latin America and he can fluently speak and write in more than a dozen of European, Asian and Middle Eastern languages.

Extremely helpful!

Knowing traditional CPU architectures and their limitations and being confronted with the need to understand how one can tackle numerous network communication protocols in real time under gigabits per seconds data rates, I picked up this book as the only one (to my knowledge) available, which did not seem devoted to esoteric & narrow research of issues. It seemed like a book, which would explain to me the whole landscape of what is needed to make fast equipment work, in other words the big picture. I was completely and positively astounded at the sheer breadth and depth of information that this book conveys. Maybe a better title should be "network processing chips" as it discusses much more than network processors and rigthfully so. The book covers all the necessary components one needs to put together next to a network processor as a big jigsaw puzzle in order to build a powerful working system, e.g. things like switch fabrics, traffic managers, content addressable memory, security coprocessors, etc. The style is flowing and engaging and the structure is very modular so one can go back and forth delving into one's areas of interest. The book can be read either from cover to cover or as a reference. Its binding makes the book even more of a pleasure to use. One must of course be able to understand some basics in order to be able to grasp the content as it may not be "bedtime" reading for some readers; it is fair however to say that after reading it one should have an infinitely better appreciation of how fast routers, wireless switches, etc. have to be logically structured and designed in order to be able to handle all of the quality-of-service-sensitive multimedia traffic they are more and more seeing. A couple of the many companies whose innovative platforms are discussed, have been either acquired or gone out of business for lack of funds during the last couple of years, something not surprising as the market for network processing chips is growing while still getting consolidated. The technology fundamentals however are crystal clear and unalterable. The overall subject is truly vast and each chapter could very well be a book by itself. Nevertheless in my opinion, the author did an excellent job in capturing the overall landscape and in laying out the fundamentals in a fresh way that not only is not intimidating but also makes sense especially for a newcomer. From here one can expand into any direction one wants while being fluent with the terms used in this field. If you want to understand this new area of advanced networking hardware and architecture internals and maybe catch your networking vendor's salesforce a bit off guard, you have simply got to buy this book.

Plenty of useful details, but could be clearer and focused

I read 'Network Processors' to learn more about this relatively new technology that is changing the way network security appliances are designed and deployed. Panos Lekkas' work seemed like the only book available that presented a broad, multi-vendor sweep of the network processor landscape. While the book has plenty of information to offer, I found it did not really live up to my expectations.

Network processors are specialized computing chips built for high performance packet processing applications. I hoped 'Network Processors' would spend a good amount of time making the case for this technology, explaining why NPs are indispensable compared to general purpose CPUs. Unfortunately, I felt the book did not make a compelling case. Chapter 2, titled 'Network Processors: Justification,' is only 10 pages, with a single chart graphing bandwidth demand vs time. I would have liked to see head-to-head comparisons of NPs against CPUs for various network applications. The book spends a lot of time discussing technologies and concepts at the periphery of NPs; I think some of that space could have been put to better use.

Here is an example of why I felt let down by this book. In the preface, the author seems to assure the reader that he will answer questions others tend to ignore. On p. xix the author writes 'In numerous industry discussions, I have encountered experienced software engineers who have implemented cutting-edge protocols, but have no idea what concepts such as scheduling, backpressure, switching fabrics, and classification mean.' To be fair, the author does explain switching fabrics and classification. However, he says almost nothing about backpressure, and he certainly never explicitly defines it; the only mention is on p. 274.

Elsewhere, I thought the book was unnecessarily confusing. It's fine to cover deep technical details, but it helps to start with clear general definitions and progress to more difficult material. The following excerpt from p. 220, the second page of chapter 12, serves as part of the 'introduction' to content addressable memory: 'The principle of associative memory is based on the inverse mechanism of establishing a relationship between the input and a specific piece of information stored in the memory array.' This sentence is fine if the reader knows what 'associative memory' is, understands the 'inverse mechanism,' and can relate to 'the input' and a 'memory array.'

The layout of the book itself may have contributed to my difficulty with it. The font is one of the smallest I have ever encountered. The footnotes are so small as to be almost illegible. I like the hardcover binding, though.

Although not the author's fault, readers should be aware that many of the companies and some of the technologies in 'Network Processors' have disappeared. Each time I encountered a new company or product I checked to see if their Web page or product line still existed. For example, IBM's PowerNP receives an entire chapter; it was sold to Hifn in January 2004. In many cases, however, surviving vendors have not brought too many products to market since the book's late 2002 publication date.

I believe a second edition of 'Network Processors' would benefit from an editor who challenges the author to be more organized and generous with his audience. The book was built on a good idea -- bringing knowledge of NPs to general readers. A second edition should ensure that goal is met, since we do need to know more about this promising technology.

About the Author
Howard Fast (1914–2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. He was a bestselling author of more than eighty works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. The son of immigrants, Fast grew up in New York City and published his first novel upon finishing high school in 1933. In 1950, his refusal to provide the United States Congress with a list of possible Communist associates earned him a three-month prison sentence. During his incarceration, Fast wrote one of his best-known novels, Spartacus (1951). Throughout his long career, Fast matched his commitment to championing social justice in his writing with a deft, lively storytelling style.

Bruce Bacon, journalist, arrives in Calcutta near the end of World War II. Bruce's father is a physician. The family did not suffer during the depression. Bacon is working on an investigation for the New York Tribune as to why stored rice was not distributed by the British to the populace during a famine.

An Indian journalist claims that the vast discrepancy between the rich and the poor is part of the colonial system. Summoned by U.S. Army Intelligence, Bruce is informed his questioning of the British High Command has been inappropriate. Subsequently his Indian informants are arrested and orders are cut for him to leave Calcutta, (he is a civilian).

Three weeks after Bacon leaves Delhi the atom bomb is dropped and the war ends. The Tribune won't publish his investigative piece, telling him it is too long. Bruce asks for and receives a six months leave to write a book.

Later the FBI tries to interview Bruce Bacon and he learns from a friend that he is on a list. Events impede progress on his book, notwithstanding the fact that he is a professional writer and has learned to produce work under dreadful circumstances.

A friend who is a Communist tells him the party would shrink his soul and destroy him. Bruce Bacon receives a subpoena to appear before the HUAC. The rest of the story is for the reader to discover. There is much excitement.

Group think remains a possibility in today's world. We would be incredibly naive if we felt that the Cold War era and that time of fears has nothing to teach us.

TRUE?

Hard to review a book you haven't read yet, but I am doing just that. I am currently reading Fast's bio-book, "Being Red," which is about his involvement in the Communist party, and as a journalist in WWII.

From what I have read in "Being Red," this novel is a tale of what happened to him in WWII in India. The story of the starvation of about 6,000,000 people in India, by the British, by manipulating the rice market, is true.

And that is the reason I am buying this book today, and reading it ASAP.

She has original examples to get your ears hearing the colors and choices she's using and gives you the understanding and context to grasp what's happening. Jane's an excellent teacher and has a great sense of humor. Well written, and with cool audio examples you will make great progress digesting this book.

The best book ever. She explains the subject in an easy manner. She teaches you. She is not showing off with long and difficult riffs. I have the basic with her book. Now i know what to do with the guitar.

Thank God for this book!

This book made it possible to start using SugarCRM. I have several copies, for me and my staff, and refer to it all the time as I work on areas unfamiliar to me. My staff are very happy to have the book which sheds light on how to correctly use the system.

I could have used a better explanation of how to create custom modules but to be fair that's pretty advanced work to tackle in a work like this.

The author has made the whole system much more approachable and wrote it all in a light, fun style. If you are trying to make head or tales of how to get started with SugarCRM, or are a current user struggling to figure it out, this book is a must.

Dry!! Dry!! and not what I was looking for!

I wanted to know more about colloidal silver. And since Searle was head of one of the biggest pharmaceuticals at one time, thought I'd read what he wrote. Not much on colloidal silver. Lots of info on colloids written in scientific jargon. Probably well written for it's purpose but not what I needed. I'm still looking for info.

About the Author
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

Completely fun!

I am always wanting new, entertaining books to read. So, when a friend recommended Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries (starting with "Crocodile on the Sandbank"), I jumped right in.
As someone else pointed out, the mystery aspect of Crocodile on the Sandbank is not the strongest part of this novel. (Don't be surprise if you guess the purpose and identity of the stalking mummy well before it is revealed.)
In every other way, this book is excellent. The characters, plot and description are delightfully entertaining. Amelia Peabody, a Victorian-era spinster of means, embarks for a tour of Egypt. But first, while in Rome, she encounters Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" by her former lover. Amelia insists that Evelyn accompany her. Once in Egypt, they meet Radcliffe and Walter Emerson. These four characters are incredible. They have strong personalities without becoming two-dimensional characatures. The way Amelia and Evelyn relate is touching, and the way Amelia and Emerson play off eachother is classic.
I don't know much about ancient Egypt, but Elizabeth Peters provides so much fascinating description. She really seems to know what she's talking about. (In fact, she got a Ph.D. in Egyptology.)
Crocodile on the Sandbank made me want to know more about Egyptology and archaeology. It certainly made me want to read more of the beautiful descriptions and wonderfully drawn characters.

This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody Series

Once I read this one, I was hooked. A great series with fun mysteries, amazing settings and fantastic characters. I have given this book to many friends as gifts and all have loved it!
If you are new to this series, here are some things you might like to know...
Elizabeth Peters also writes under the name Barbara Michaels (not sure which is her real name). Personally, I have not been impressed by some of her other books outside of the Peabody mysteries. The Amelia Peabody books are adventure/mystery stories that take place in Egypt, in the late 1800's.

Eleanor Lavish goes to Egypt

Whenever I read Elizabeth Peter's Amanda Peabody novels, I cannot help thinking of Eleanor Lavish (played by Dame Judi Dench in a Room With A View). Remember Eleanor Lavish during the picture, proclaiming the benefits of Mackintosh Squares? Or her descriptions of Florence to Charlotte Bartlett? If you found Eleanor Lavish entertaining, you will LOVE Amelia Peabody.
Armed with a parasol, a first-aid kit, and a formidable confidence in the superiority of the British Empire and its cultural conventions, Amelia Peabody sets out for an adventure in Egypt. On her way, she rescues a fainting Englishwoman, hires a dahabeeyah to take her down the Nile to view archaeological remains, and meets the Emerson brothers. While Walter Emerson falls for our fainting Englishwoman, his older brother Radcliffe Emerson--as curmudgeonly as Amelia--begins to do battle for control of his archaeological site. His rival? Parasol-wielding Amelia Peabody, of course.
The plot, as other reviewers suggest, is purely secondary to the characters--especially Amelia. If you want to learn a little about Egypt and in the process solve a completely unsurprising mystery then you can have no better companion than the forthright Amelia Peabody. How many mysteries make you laugh out-loud at the antics of the heroine?

Pithy and thought-provoking

Having an inquiring mind, I purchased this volume as source material for wide ranging research I conduct into all things metaphysical.
I have to say, I found it pithy and thought-provoking. Some may view this a journey into the sacred science of the magi...others, a journey of self reflection. Whatever your view, anything that helps us break away from the senses-numbed mindset of the world is good in my book.
Stop and think. Look inside and see yourself as you truly are. To "Know" yourself, is the beginning of enlightenment.
Try it...I think you'll be amazed. :)

They could just as well be referred to as Gnostics and or Magi or in some cases mystical kabbalists which might all be referred to as Wikkum or Wiccans Witches and Wizards. The main differences are between the extremes along the Spectrum of LHP/RHP. Black Magic can be thought of as underside and RHP being like every spell, desire and intention the flip side or Overlord. But whether rule is enforced in darkness it is effulgent in it's equal and opposite.
