Great political & cultural analysis - Poor Investment Advice

I first read this book in the early 90's and was struck by the in-depth scholarship and research the authors had invested. I felt then and still feel today that they made an insightful analysis of the forces at work in the world today as we grapple with the end of the cold war, the "new economy" and the developing clash of civilizations. I have been even more amazed over the years as the trends and forces they presented evolve along the lines forecast in the book. Especially salient are the chapters on the struggle with Islam replacing that with Marx and the effects of technological change on the scale of effective military operations.
That being said, had you followed the investment advice in the book since its pubication you would have lost a significant amount of money over the last few years. This is the only reason I rated it four stars instead of five. The investment analysis is solid, and in fact identifies facts that should be taken into account when structuring a financial portfolio, as a portion of it should be designed for worse case scenarios. The conclusions the authors arrived at were incorrect however, although it may just have been bad timing rather than incorrect prediction. As the Terrorist war heats up, (as forecast in the book), we may see an acceleration of the forces the book points out.
In sum, read this book because it will help you understand the forces going on in the world and how the real world works. Also recommended is their follow-on work, "The Sovereign Individual"

Long but Great read

The Great Reckoning is a long but great read. It will NOT appeal to those who focus on 30 second sound bites and 120 second interviews on Good Morning America. If that's your bag, forget this book. It also requires thinking, so if you don't like to think about things in general, or dismiss history and the liberal arts in general, this book will be a total turn off.
A number of people bought this book when first published as a "trading" strategy book. I don't know where they got that idea from, perhaps they simply assumed to much. Rather, it is about probabilities and possibilites in the 1990's on the macro level with plenty of caveats.
In retrospective hindsight, the authors had some outstanding hits, and some complete misses. However, on the whole, those who dismissed this book during the tech bubble are now looking at themselves in the mirror and wondering how stupid they were to dismiss it out of hand.
If you think through what they have to say, you begin to realize that some things will take longer to work out than others. A "must" book to read if you enjoy looking beyond the daily "noise".

Amazing summary book with clear overview.

This summary book is amazing and very helpful. I purchased this book from the wake of curiosity because I had interest to know more about Grit. By reading this book I have come to know about what Grit is and why it matters. Angela Duckworth is a psychologist and inside of that book she shared her own experience with Grit. By reading this book I have gotten a clear overview about the original book’s contents. This book showed me about the playing fields of Grits, taught me about the parenting for Grit and much more. I am glad to read this book and by reading this summary book I am impressed.

Well I never knew who Duckworth is until I read this book. He proves that grit is out there and that anyone in an any profession, from professional swimmer to manager of a well-known chain, even a garbage man, can have grit, Duckworth also admits that there are still questions unknown about grit; however, the signs of it are right of in our face and it is possible to achieve the trait. Through Duckworth’s experiences and those of who she interviewed, we can see that grit is not just what we do, but who we are in generally as human.

About the Author
George Perkins is Professor of English at Eastern Michigan University and an Associate Editor of Narrative. He holds degrees from Tufts and Duke universities and received his Ph.D. from Cornell. He has been a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Newcastle in Australia and has held a Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. In addition to Newcastle and Edinburgh, he has taught at Washington University, Baldwin-Wallace College and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Cheaper than 12th edition

This book was an excellent substitution for the 12th edition of the same title. The class I was in "required" 12th edition and I bought this one by mistake--no mistake! I saved money and it didn't effect my ability to complete the class. The subtle differences between the two editions isn't worth the price difference.

Entertaining book written by a total scumbag

This book contains more background on Jordan's early days, his friends, etc.. He again reveals himself as a total scumbag and it is obvious that he has not changed. After ratting out his friends to the police, he rats them out to the general public in order to make some more money. And there are truly bizarre things here, like how the author gets morally outraged by a couple of girls dancing topless by his pool, in plain view of his young daughter. This from a man who has wandered around his home in a drugged stupor for most of that child's life, who has ripped off thousands of people, and who lies and betrays and cheats at every opportunity. As in the first book, we find some interesting insights every once in a while. At one point, he says that he was the happiest before he became rich, when his first wife and he were still struggling.

This book is much better written than the first one, The Wolf of Wall Street. It is obvious that Jordan is a fast learner, if nothing else. It is also a real page-turner, which is why I am giving it 4 stars.

A MUST READ AFTER READING "THE WOLF OF WALL STREET" !

If you read the Wolf of Wall Street, you should read Catching the Wolf of Wall Street - it is a good read and finishes off the former book. He is just as funny as in his first book but he also tells, in depth, what happened to him in the end and how he had to rat out all his friends, especially how he ended up being wired to catch them. He explains in great detail what made him turn on them and how he finally came through it all as a better person.

In 2011, Mr. Belfort penned "Catching the Wolf of Wall Street." This book is the exact polar opposite of its predecessor. In this sequel, Jordan is nearly broke, on the verge of divorce from his second wife, struggling to kick his drug/alcohol problems, and in order to receive a 5K letter and reduced sentence, Jordan must wear a wire, and rat on his former friends. It is moving to see someone who has fallen so far, and so fast attempt to salvage the wreckage of his life, while clinging to his family, and his fortune. Gone are the wild stories of partying, and debauchery at Stratton Oakmont. Here is a man who has hit complete rock bottom. Jordan mocks his own paltry writing skills at the end of the book, yet ironically goes forward to write two excellent bestsellers. "Catching the Wolf of Wall Street" is highly recommended....especially to those who enjoyed both the book, and movie "Wolf of Wall Street." Buy it, and read it today from www.amazon.com.

I forgot how easy it was to sit down with a Baby-sitters Club book and just finish it in one sitting. This is probably one of the reasons I loved the series as a little girl. The other reason lay with the girls themselves. Despite how much or how little I liked each character, they all had at least one thing that resonated with the young girl I was.

Mary Anne Spier is actually the first member of The Baby-sitters Club that I was introduced to and she always remained one of my favorites. Despite the fact I was more like Kristy Thomas, I found something comforting about how sensitive Mary Anne could be and how loving she was towards her friends. Whenever trouble stirs up within the group, she’s usually the one trying to maintain the peace.

This is especially apparent in this first story based around Mary Anne. After months of little things bothering them (i.e. people not offering jobs, people being rude, etc.) the girls find themselves at odds with one another after a huge blow up. Surprisingly, the adult in me didn’t spend the entire book rolling my eyes at the drama between the girls. Because, even now, as an adult, I know how easily one little argument, disagreement or misunderstanding can blow up into a huge fight. Besides, I remember the petty fights my friends and I had at the age and no matter how stupid it was, we let them drag on and on and on.

This particular fight actually serves as a positive thing for Mary Anne and in the end, the entire club. For Mary Anne, it forces her out of her comfort zone. For too long, she’s hidden behind Kristy and Claudia. She’s shy and never makes it a point to befriend people other than those who are friends with her friends. But when this fight leaves her sitting all alone in the cafeteria, she finds the courage to befriend a new girl, Dawn Schafer. Not only does it open her up to making a new friend, but it allows her an opportunity to find her own voice. Especially in regards to sticking up for herself with her friends and ultimately her father, who still treats her like a little girl.

Once everything is said and done, the girls manage to make up and find themselves with a new member in their midst. Meanwhile, Mary Anne’s father allows her to rid herself of the childish braids, choose her own clothing (within reason, obviously) and even have a later curfew for babysitting. True, the stories of these girls aren’t going to become classical fiction like Little Women or Little House on the Prairie did, but they had an impact on my childhood and I love having the opportunity to try and recapture that feeling.

In the third book in the Babysitters Club Series, Mary Anne goes threw many tragic episodes. The illustrations clearly capture the events in the book. I love the work of brilliance and this obliviously shows.

My daughter has struggled with reading for several years. This book, because of the "comic book" version it is written in has her reading independently and with enthusiasm for the first time. I hope they continue with the rest of the series because if they do I will buy them ALL for her.
