The Complete DUKW: Historical Reference is, by far, the most comprehensive study of GMC's amphibious 2-1/2-ton truck ever to be published. Not only is the photo-album like presentation packed with more than 750 photographs and detailed drawings, author David Doyle has delved deep into primary research to uncover new information--and dispel many commonly held misconceptions--about the vehicle.

Though Doyle relied on never-before publicly distributed primary source documents from the archives of General Motors, the Roderick and Olin Stephens collection at Mystic Seaport and the National Defense Research Committee, he even had the opportunity to spend long hours discussing the vehicles with Julius Grigore, the project manager for the Flying DUKW and Super DUKW. The reams of documents from the National Archives and even an unpublished autobiography by Roderick Stephens provide a solid backbone of credibility to this work.

THE book on the GMC DUKW !!

Just got my copy of The Complete DUKW and I am amazed at the amount of detailed info and photos of the vehicle!

The GMC factory photos of the assembly line of the "Duck" are fantastic and show it going from pieces of sheet metal to the final assembly and water testing. The photos are amazingly clear and you can see all the small details in them.

The author has provided the real story of how the vehicle was developed including detailed info on the people who designed and tested it. This info has never been in any DUKW book that I have read before...going even into how the DUKW was an offshoot of the Ford GPA amphibious jeep. It is also the first time I have seen documentation of the production of the DUKW at the GMC St. Louis Plant!

In addition to this the author has included photos and data on what seems to be every variation, accessory and add-on kits that were developed and used on these vehicles. The later chapters document the use of "Ducks" in the different theaters of war and post war as well.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who owns a DUKW, models them or loves military vehicles.

Paradigm shift

I'm stepping out on a limb here and saying this is that rare thing: a book written by a non-specialist that results in a paradigm shift. Bertrand David has probably solved a mystery that has alluded experts since cave paintings were first discovered in 1870: how did hunter gatherers 30,000 years ago create the artwork?

Paleolithic cave painting is mysterious because there are so many unanswered questions. They were created during a 20,000+ year period but saw little improvement in form. The oldest ones are as good (if not better) then the newest. A fully formed art tradition appeared from thin air and then lasted unchanged for 20,000 years(!). In recorded history, art traditions rise and fall even over 50 or 100 year periods much less 1 thousand. The cave art is consistent across geographic areas. It has certain unusual characteristics, such as profile views of animals and rarely is the interior body detailed. David gives another dozen or more questions that I won't go into here but they are enough to leave one in despair. Suffice to say, David has hit upon what is almost surely the right answer, one so simple it's astounding no one has thought of it before 2010. The book is a joy to read and very accessible to the average reader, indeed it would make a good young adult book. I think a lot of the literature on cave art has been destroyed by this 150 page essay written so genteelly by an unassuming artist in France. And it will surely open new avenues for exploration and discovery of what cave art has to say.

Has the Oldest Enigma of Humanity been really solved?

I bought the book by Bertrand David and Jean-Jacques Lefrère with keen interest to see how the mystery around Paleolithic Cave Paintings has been solved. The book is small and easy to read. First few chapters of the book are about Mr David’s entry to the subject. I skipped parts of these chapters to get to the content I was eager to read. I found myself to be little disappointed with the way the key idea of the book was argued for. Their idea was simple yet needed supportive evidence. Early people used figurines of animals to cast shadows on the cave walls with the help of the ‘flickering’ flames of lamps. It is known that there is an abundance of animal figurines from the Paleolithic Period. Not only figurines but also the lamps were discovered in these Paleolithic Caves. The authour himself acknowledges the difficulty of producing a traceable image using the suggested technique. "Yet no matter how many times I tried, I never managed to arrive at a helpful rule of thumb that would make it possible to consistently obtain a clear shadow, or even discernible one for that matter"p79.
If making a shadow is such a vexing task, how could the early man do it in a deep dark cave? If the lamps were burning for a long time inside the cave they should have definitely blackened the cave roof. But one can argue that they used a method that was similar to what I used to do as a child to collect the soot from oil lamps. They might have placed a shiny side of a dry bark over the lamp to collect the soot, which they in turn used to draw in black.
The authours claim that when they came up with their idea, they didn’t know about Mr Matt Gatton’s work, which shows some similarities to theirs. According to them, Mr Matt Gatton imagined that camera obscura effect might have created a ‘negative’ image of an animal on a ‘plaquette’ that Paleolithic painters used for creating its ‘positive’ image on the cave wall (p. 111). Mr Matt Gatton in a series of papers (Gatton, M (2010) Pleistocene Coalition News Vol 2 (3) May-June p4-5, Vol 2(4) July-Aug p6-7 and Vol 2(5) Sep-Oct p8-9) explained how an appropriate size of hole on the tent of Paleolithic people could act as a camera obscura ("Paleo-Camera"), which could cast inside the tent an inverted image of an animal lurking outside. This inverted image can be traced on to a surface like a paver stone some examples of which were found in the caves. The image was small and had to be transferred onto the walls of caves via a process of projection somewhat similar to Mr David’s. However, Mr David observes that these drawings on free-standing surfaces are markedly different to the cave paintings in composition. Jean Clottes in his book on cave art agrees and says, in the least in respect of one cave, "the artists who made them [sandstone plaquettes found in Les Trois-Freres] were therefore not the same ones who had access to that cave walls." (p244 of Cave Art, Phaidon).
Furthermore, Mr Gatton’s idea seems to be somewhat convoluted for the creation of a cave art. Why do someone go through such a process when Mr David’s process is simpler. Animals are always moving and it is very difficult to imagine that they would stay quite until an artist traces the image on to some surface. Mr Gatton and Dr Leah Carreon (Gatton, M and Carreon, L (2012) Pleistocene Coalition News Vol 4 (4) July-August p1-3) uses probabilistic arguments to prove that these ancestors of ours might have seen camera obscura effect at least one per cent of the time in a day (a range of 1-8% per day). The existence of the said effect doesn’t mean a lot because observing camera obscura effect doesn’t prove that these artists used it to create the prehistoric images. On the other hand, I also believe their conclusions are confusing, to say the least. On the basis of the assumptions and deductions used to derive their probabilities they can only draw conclusions about the year not the day. Their sample space for estimating various probabilities about factors such as the weather and dwelling’s exposure to sunlight consists of the year. Thus, one should wonder how they can interpret their final probability as chances per day. In this light, even the probability of observing a camera obscura effect should be far lower than what Mr Gatton and Dr Carreon believe, i.e. between one to eight times in a 100 year period. In the final analysis, the said probabilities don't add much value anyway. One imaginative individual with the bright idea was very probably all that was required. The rest could be taken care of by the diffusion of innovation. Even though none of the points in the above discussion prove that Mr David’s approach is better, it makes it equally important contender. In favour of Mr David’s method, we can say that the artist didn’t have to go through the extra step of using the camera obscura effect to create a mobile art. The only trouble with Mr David’s method is adjusting the light to get the image displayed on the wall.
There are some other counter-arguments to the reasoning provided in support of Mr David’s method of creating cave paintings. One such argument is about the relative difficulty of the method in contrast to some easier ones. The early ancestors could have drawn these images on an animal hide in daylight, cut the shapes using their stone implements and used those cutouts to draw the outlines of animals inside the caves. If they had some supernatural theme associated with this practice, it would have been very easy for them to find time to perform the above task. As we know the areas where there was light, were usually avoided by these early painters. They could have done the drawing on an animal hide at the area near the opening of the cave and the finished product might have been carried inside to trace it on to the wall. Perhaps, few people held these cutouts on to the wall and others drew the outline. The painters did not need any extra light at all. Like reading Braille writing, a cutout can be easily traced even if there's very faint light or no light at all. Let us assume that the pubescent girls lived inside these caves as a ritual practice in Paleolithic period (Reflections on Palaeolithic Cave Art, Girls at Puberty and the Origin of Religion, published in Social Science Research Network - SSRN). They had been secluded and had nothing much to do. They had all the time to draw an image on a hide, cut it out and use it to trace an image inside the cave as a collective activity.
The second argument is concerned with the ease of testing Mr David’s hypothesis. It is easy to reverse-engineer the process and work out what the distances involved and the size of the figurines required to come up with the images on the wall had to be. Did they have enough space inside the caves to do all the manoeuvres needed to get the images right? Such a process will be almost like a definitive proof of the feasibility of Mr Davis’ hypothesis and doesn’t involve all the work discussed in the book as a proof of concept. It seems strange that the authors of the book didn’t use the above scenario to build a strong case for their hypothesis.
Thus, the Oldest Enigma of Humanity, sadly, is yet to be solved.

Pass the Plonk, Please

Something has happened to food writing over the past decade or so. So much of it now is dedicated to specialist topics such as sustainable farming, organic produce, head to tail cooking, dining experiences involving sous-vide or foam. These articles are like hanging out at a wine tasting where everyone is a wine snob and you don't know what they are talking about and you are reluctant to mention that your personal favorite is the vintage last year red that's sold in a jug.

I like stories about chili cook-offs or why someone decided to stop being a vegetarian or what it's like to be a wait person or dishwasher or busboy, which is what food writing was before the specialists got hold of it. Even the big chefs of old, Julia Child, James Beard, and other foodies like M.F.K. Fisher and Craig Claiborne, wrote essays that were about life beyond food, and they rarely took themselves too seriously.

This year's Best Food Writing starts out with the ponderous chef-heavy writing and works its way to the more personal essays. The best pieces are toward the back of the book. My favorite was an unexpected essay by comedy writer John DeVore. He declared that Taco Bell has the best Mexican food. Preposterous! Then he proceeded to back up his statement quite convincingly. The article started out with a dude-ish tone but quickly moved on to a more thoughtful and even touching conclusion.

Even Anthony Bourdain took a break from his tough guy posturing to write an ode to the clams of his childhood and the pleasure of passing on a tradition to his daughter. I also enjoyed the story of Friday Night Meatballs and that of Carolyn Phillips' connecting with her Chinese father-in-law by cooking a holiday meal with him.

There's enough variety in the collection to be sure that you won't walk away from Best Food Writing 2015 hungry.

A feast!

I've been buying and reading the Best Food Writing series since BFW 2000 came out (the year it started) - and this, the 13th volume, has more pages added to it with an even more diverse range of topics. I love how Holly Hughes spots the trends and organizes the articles around the trends, which are relevant. I hope she keeps this up for years and years to come...because not only is she a genius at selecting the articles and discerning the trends, she does so deftly and it feels like returning to an old friend's kitchen table, picking up where we last left off, and having a feast.

I love love love this book. It's a collection of essays of great food writing and all of the ones that I've read in here are amazing. They really connect how food writing isn't just about the food itself but it has to do with the people that you eat food with and the places where you eat food. There was only one or two that I thought were ehh. The essays made me cry, the made me laugh, and the essays made me remember why I loved eating food. This isn't one of those sit down and read the whole book type things its more of a book that you want to sit down and flip thru the pages until you find one that you want to read. It's a great book to keep around the house to inspire you! Would recommend this book!!!

Great Book for Beginners to Learn Economics

Let me start by saying that Patrick Welch, the author of this book, is our economics professor at Saint Louis University. He is not strict by any means and uses the most basic and introductory words possible so that everyone can learn the material. The author is a grandpa-ish type of professor and that is evident in his book.

The book starts off with an introduction to what economics is used for, and throughout the book, multiple examples with many easy to read graphs are utilized to explain topics from supply & demand, types of businesses, and how businesses and households interact with one another.

Saved me 60 bucks!

Had that sticky stuff on the binding, like it had had a sticker on it at some point. Never got the purchase receipt either. Other than that it was in like new condition, like it said. Saved almost 60 bucks versus if I had bought it from my school bookstore used. Wish they had all the books I needed for classes.

Widely read, widely anthologized, widely interviewed, and widely taught, Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was for decades among the most influential writers of the feminist movement and one of the best-known American public intellectuals. She wrote two dozen volumes of poetry and more than a half-dozen of prose. Her constellation of honors includes a National Book Award for poetry for Tonight, No Poetry Will Serve, a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 1994, and a National Book Award for poetry in 1974 for Diving Into the Wreck. That volume, published in 1973, is considered her masterwork. Ms. Rich’s other volumes of poetry include The Dream of a Common Language, A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far, An Atlas of the Difficult World, The School Among the Ruins, and Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth. Her prose includes the essay collections On Lies, Secrets, and Silence; Blood, Bread, and Poetry; an influential essay, “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” and the nonfiction book Of Woman Born, which examines the institution of motherhood as a socio-historic construct. In 2006, Rich was awarded the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the National Book Foundation. Super helpful introduction

I recently moved to Poland for a short term work assignment. I don't speak any Polish and only had about a week's notice, so I needed something that would help me learn some basics quickly. This book was very helpful with learning everyday phrases and common words. It explains the pronunciation of words in an easy to understand manner and provides countless examples of conversations and explanations of cultural quirks. It's definitely a good choice for those who might be traveling to Poland and would like to understand a bit of the language and culture upon arrival.

GOOD IF YOU'VE NEVER USED THE POLISH LANGUAGE AND ARE STARTING FROM SCRATCH !

I learned Polish as a child, but after my dad and grandparents died I didn't use it and forgot a lot. This book is a good refresher. Since I already knew how to read Polish, the section on pronunciation didn't help me, but if you have never used the Polish language - its really good. The descriptions of how to say various letter combinations are very clear and would be useful to a beginner. This is a good beginner's book for conversational Polish.

Outstanding Introduction to Polish Language

This book is not for dummies, but it is excellent as an introduction to the language. It was a fabulous help as I prepared for travel to Poland. The book includes a CD that presents all-aural examples and a text that explained all the basic grammar, with essential vocabulary lists and sample sentences. I was exceedingly well-prepared for travel, having used this in conjunction with other media. Does not say the sentence in English, only Polish, but gives the situation or context. I used it for several months of listening to train my ear whenever I drove anywhere, before beginning to take notes from the book. The notebook that resulted was most helpful, even after I was in the country. Ms. Gabryanczyk has done an outstanding job of presenting practice in initial aural immersion and written practice.

A Revised Version of an Inferior Test Prep Guide

When REA (Research & Education Association) released its initial version of GRE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH in 1989, I bought it to prepare myself for that test. I was not particularly impressed with the organization or the lack of suggestion as to how to best make use of the material presented. Still, authors Beard, Kennedy, Liftig, and Malek included six full length exams with explanations. That was 230 x 6 or 1,380 test prep questions. I took the test and scored middlingly. Years later, I learned to "psyche" out the test and was surprised to discover a new and supposedly updated version. In this newer version, Malek cuts down the number of tests from 6 to 3. Nearly every one of the regurgitated questions is a reprint from nearly 15 years ago, thus ensuring that this text does not reflect any of the major changes in test content during that time. What Malek does try is to emulate the far more successful paradign put out by the Princeton Review's CRACKING THE GRE LITERATURE by codifying the vast array of western literature: genres, timelines, book and author lists, literary terms, schools of literary criticism, etc. The problem is that Malek did not do half as thorough a job as the Princeton Review did. Malek does little more than to use an overly broad brush to skim a distressingly long list of required readings without giving any hint as how to best do that. True, neither did the Princeton Review, but at least the latter presented a methodology that was reasonable. This is not to say that Malek's updated text is useless. Anything, no matter how scant, that prepares you for a mind-numbing test has its uses, but if you insist on using Malek, you might prefer to go to the library to find the 1989 version that gives more preparation than its more recent cousin. By the way, Malek's test questions themselves: many of them are so outlandish that one is amazed that he thinks ETS will ask such trivia.

The Worst Test Prep for the GRE

I'm with many of the other reviewers: stick with the Princeton Review's test prep, and the Norton Anthologies. This book is trash. I'm infuriated that it's considered a valid study guide and continues to be published. Here's a sample practice test question:

Which three elements best define Post-Modernism?

a) Randomness, excess, discontinuity
b) Flashback, fragmentation, humor
c) Nature, faith, solidity
d) Immorality, sense of loss, meaninglessness
e) Montage, metaphor, absurdity

I was longing for an answer choice f) that might read "One adjective from each of the above. A pastiche of the pre-existing choices."

The Research and Education Association lists a) as the correct answer. If you buy this book, you'll be answering questions that would never be asked on the GRE in English Literature, and you'll be scouring the answer choices for the incorrect answer that the slip-shod REA would call correct.

Very comprehensive!

This is a great book! The review is substantial and there are 3 practice tests. While I understand that many previous reviewers are not happy with REA removing 3 practice tests from the first edition (which had a total of 6), they also replaced them with review chapters. The first edition was only a book of practice tests. I have sat for the actual test once already and I think the questions are exactly the types that are asked. The review chapters won't be enough to review, but no one book ever will be. You will have to pull out all of your Norton Anthologies and read for months. And I seriously recommend a course in literary theory to anyone who is still enrolled in school. There's no way around it. This test is getting harder. Just try one practice test before reviewing all that much and you will see what I'm talking about.
