About the Author

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

 

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago.  He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

 

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

About the Author
John Algeo is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Georgia. He is past president of the American Dialect Society, the Dictionary Society of North America, and the American Name Society. He was an associate editor of the OXFORD COMPANION TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE and editor of Volume 6 of the CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: ENGLISH IN NORTH AMERICA. He was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and a Guggenheim Fellow at University College London and is author of the 2006 Cambridge book BRITISH OR AMERICAN ENGLISH? A HANDBOOK OF WORD AND GRAMMAR PATTERNS.

Carmen Acevedo Butcher is Professor of English and Scholar-in-Residence at Shorter University. A Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year for Georgia, she also received a President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. She taught graduate- and undergraduate-level linguistics as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea, and was a Fulbright Scholar at University College London. She also studied at Ruprecht-Karls Universit�t Heidelberg as a Rotary International Graduate Scholar. She has served as a commentator for Georgia Public Broadcasting and authored several books on medieval literature, Christian mystics, and linguistics. Her translation of THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING received the 46th annual Georgia Author of the Year award, the oldest literary award in the Southeastern United States.

Johansen borrows openly from the movies Hollywood thinks women love (Grace talks to horses, though she balks at being called a horse whisperer), crafts family scenes (Marvot playing chess with his son; the Pair with their colt) and offers a mother and father who defend the world from criminals while yearning for domestic tranquillity. The Johansen formula works so well in this novel that readers may expect a sequel. (Dec.)

They wanted to find out why a French Moroccan underworld kingpin wanted to train two beautiful, wild, and extremely dangerous horses known as "the Pair." The mission was a failure, and Grace, then pregnant, went into hiding, distrusting Kilmer, with whom she was having an affair. Now Marvot has put a bounty on Grace and Frankie's heads, wanting to bring them back to Morocco to train the horses. Kilmer wants to kill Marvot and use "the Pair" himself. Frankie trusts Kilmer; now Grace must find out if she can do the same. Johansen gives her readers what they have come to expect from the queen of suspense: a truly evil, skin-crawling villain and complex heroes who must tangle with him in the shadow world of foreign intrigue. I've got to go against the crowd here.

I wouldn't call this her best. I wouldn't even put it in the top ten. It's a grab bag of genre cliches loosely held together by momentum with a sub-plot that literally made me say "That's IT?" I mean, seriously - that's the pivotal thing that makes the bad guy hate them and causes everything to roll? Because it's pretty absurd. It's not even suspend your disbelief absurd, it's just cartoonish.

Essentially, you have a Woman On The Run with a Child In Danger and she's been Abandoned By The CIA so only her ExLover The Mercenary can help her, but she doesn't trust him because, well, that's what she does. Suddenly things are exploding, bad guys are proving their oh so bad by threating to sexually assualt children, and the Woman Must Face Down Evil to prevail. Except the evil is so laughably evil that you wonder he survived as long as he did. And the Way She Can Succeed is so implausible that you really can't take it seriously. It requires magic animals and weather shamans.

Iris Johansen writes great thrillers. This one is a misfire. Wait for paperback if you must know and if you haven't read her at all, pick another.

I am constantly amazed at what can get published. The plot of this book requires the reader to suspend any sense of logic and rationality. In fact, the plot is so far-fetched I thought it was a parody. The characters are not believable at all. The reader is supposed to believe that Mozart has been re-incarnated as Frankie. Um right. And I am the queen of Spain. This is the first book by the author that I have read and I am not anxious to pick up another one. I found the plot lines and character developments to be insultingly stupid. Almost too embarassed to donate this book. I pray for the trees sacrificed to make this.

Another GREAT read by the master.

Stephen King has done it again. Literally with these two stories that were originally published in 2010. They were fun to read again, but I do hate to buy as new something that I already have. That said, if you haven't read these before you're in for a real treat.

Friendship, love, sex, violence, gambling, betrayal, all the ingredients are reunited to take you on a breath-taking voyage, from which nobody except the reader comes back unhurt. No crap, no-fooling around, just plain, rough, and authentic adventure! A must in this literary genre.

I've read quiet some work now from this specific author and I must say that,being a down to earth person;it seems a bit too cool and perfect at some times... Although I must state that this man has a talent to keep his readers in constant tension,practicly obligating them to turn the next page... I therefor recommend this and his other books to all those who are looking for some easy-read, although not cheaply wrote biographic work... A final tip : those who master the French language; read Cizia Zyke's work in the original version, it's so much more alive....

What a fantastic adventure story this is! I can read this book over and over again and never get tired of it. Zyke is a great storyteller and the adventures he had in Costa Rica while searching gold are incredible. This is the funniest and most exciting book i have ever read and i can commend it to everyone.

This book accompanies an excellent You Tube Video Series

This is an older book and there don't seem to be any new copies around, so why did I buy it instead of a more current Russian Textbook? Because, I have already done the latter but afterwards I discovered a series on YouTube called "Russian World". It's an on-going series of 30 minute lessons and the Lady uses this textbook. After trying other Russian textbooks (Live from Russia and some others) and even having a live teacher I still struggled. I've learned more watching the YouTube Series than I ever learned in class. You can watch the series without this textbook, but if you can get it, it's much better! Book arrived in great condition.

Pretty good story...

This was a good read. It started out really good in letting us know that no matter how much we love God and want to be our best for Him we are still human and make mistakes. No marriage is perfect, simply because two imperfect people are molding together with the goal of becoming one. I like the reality of the story in that the author lets us know there are no fairytales. I started getting disappointed toward the end, it sort of gets corny and predictable.

I did not want this book to end. Yes, Derrick had some issues in the beginning. Stacey did try hard at first to help him and be a good wife and he pushed her way and I know that had to be hard, but like her mother pleaded with her to do was hang in there. Boy oh boy I know she was glad that she did not divorce him. How do I wish God could send me the ending Derrick...lol

The Holy Spirit Will Bring you to All Truth...

If you ask the question which author writes stories of redemption and reconciliation I would undoubtedly say Wanda Campbell. She has taken on issues in her novels such as absentee parents, old hurts, abuse, death, alcoholism, bigger than life secrets and a pastor addicted to pornography.
Many human conditions separate us from God, but it's His love that comes right in and bathes us in His grace.
How is it that a fairytale can begin as one and move forward in the same way, but somehow become weaved with issues?
Stacelyn and Derrick Garrison met in college through friends, they believed they were made for one another and both had a relationship with God. But life's challenges and their busyness pushed God further and further down the list. In relationships we have to learn to wait for one another, and we have to wait on God before we get married, a lesson Staci and Derrick quickly find important.
Derrick's insecurities, secrets and emotional instability cause him to walk away from the women he loves and their marriage just 18 months to a year old. Staci loves her husband and wants nothing more than to understand what is going on with him, but instead of sharing; Derrick retreats into himself, and makes the worse decision of his life and his past and the root of his issues meet head on.
Staci continues to try and support her husband but once he moves out all of her insecurities unfold and she begins to spend her time with Malcolm to mend an aching hurt and bruised ego. But as we all know if you are going to pray why worry? Staci would have done well if she had paid into that advice. She prayed and worried and then she just worried and pushed God right out the picture, when she needed Him the most. Instead of waiting for Derrick she moved without him, instead of heeding to Gods voice she pushed it away. Until finally she has no choice but to listen, God finally has her attention.

I enjoy how Campbell introduce her readers to flawed characters in need of God's grace. The redemption happens so naturally all the reader can do is sit back and enjoy the transformation.

Whenever I finish reading a Campbell novel I am drenched in Psalm 34:8 "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him".

About the Author

Sylvain Bouteill� is Head Key Account Management and a member of the management team of the North American division of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. In 1996, he joined Swiss Re in Zurich, Switzerland, in the newly created credit risk management division. In 1998, Bouteill� moved to New York where, as U.S. Head of Credit Risk Management, he was responsible for credit risk aspects of all insurance and capital markets transactions. In 2003, he became U.S. Head of Structured Credit Underwriting, where he originated and structured credit derivatives and financial guaranty reinsurance transactions. Since 2008, Bouteill� has been working with risk managers of Fortune 500 companies to develop traditional and non-standard insurance solutions. Bouteill� holds an MS in civil engineering from ENTPE (France) and an MBA from INSEAD (France).

Diane Coogan-Pushner is Distinguished Lecturer and Director of the Graduate Program in Risk Management at Queens College, City University of New York. She began her career in financial services at the World Bank and held increasingly senior positions in finance and strategy at AT&T and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Coogan-Pushner moved to Swiss Re, and as Managing Director, originated and structured reinsurance transactions and other risk transfer solutions for insurance clients. Other credits include roles as a portfolio manager for a hedge fund and for a private equity fund both dedicated to financial services. She has served as a director for an insurer and as a member of S&P's Insurance Ratings Advisory Council, and consults to financial institutions in their asset management strategy. She received her PhD in economics from Boston University in 1992 and is a CFA charterholder.

Highly recommended to professionals and students

The Handbook of CRM is a great book that I highly recommend to professionals and students anxious to learn more about Credit Risk Management. It is organized into 18 chapters describing the fundamental way to handle credit exposures in a large organization. One can learn about things to pay attention to when entering into new transactions, how to analyze credit risk, how to manage a portfolio and techniques to mitigate credit risk if and when necessary. The book follows a logical order which is easy to follow. It is not too technical and you do not need to have previous knowledge of the subject to understand the main messages. It is very practical and illustrated with many examples which help understand what the authors explain. I am glad I finally found a book about Credit Risk Management from which I could learn. A real success.

Easy to comprehend, the content is logically structured to explain various facets of credit risk management that are broadly applicable in various disciplines. It provides practical context of credit risk fundamentals as well as skills and tools required to build careers in this field.
Engaging, insightful and thought provoking, it has a lot of examples on how to apply theoretical frameworks in real world situations.
