Love the website, love the book!

Wow. As a fan of mongabay.com I was excited to see what Rhett Butler would do with a children's book. Mixing personal stories of adventures in the rainforest with each section of the book, Butler breaks walks the reader through what rainforest are, why they are important, how they are being destroyed and what people can do to save them. A personal favorite of mine is the section on indigenous people and their use of medicinal plants for healing, the pictures in this portion are particularly interesting. Similar to the kids section of mongaybay.com, the language is simple but the message and stories are engaging. Stories about evading silverback gorillas or searching for rainbow colored lizards with kids in Ecuador will inspire young adventurers and environmentalist making learning pleasurable and exciting. Many of my friends with kids will be getting one of these for Christmas this year as a gift.

Great for both kids and adults!

This is a really great resource for environmentally-conscious older kids (and their parents) to learn about the rainforest, including why they are important and what is causing them to be destroyed. The beautiful pictures and personal stories really bring rainforests to life and help instill the urgency to save them. Definitely recommended for readers of all ages!

Not only is RAINFORESTS perfect for teaching kids, but it is also excellent for heightening public awareness of a true fact: we and our Planet have a commun fate. We cannot hurt one without hurting the other. A must-read-and-re-read book.

Mr. President...do you even lift?

This election year, while the talking heads are pondering each candidate's policy bonafides, I'm all over here like, "Bro, do you even lift?" Finkel's insightful and well-researched look into this underrated presidential attribute is not without merit, since sometimes an executive's stewardship of his body can be predictive of his stewardship of the Oval. Without reading this book, name a single landmark decision made by the onerously large President Taft.........

Exactly. Think about that when you cast your votes this fall. You don't have to vote for the best athlete but after reading Finkel's latest, you may be yearning for a Commander-in-Chief that is at least as capable of tossing a spiral as he is of kissing babies.

This is a fun read for even the most casual fan of history and a must read for any fitness-and-freedom loving iron junkie!

Impressive research

There has always been a close connection between sports and the office of the Presdient, from the famous -- and infamous -- attempts at throwing out a first pitch, to virtually every sports team making its way to the White House for a ceremonial jersey exchange and photo op. But this book gets to the core of sports and the presidency by examining the athletic careers of the presidents themselves. Clearly a result of exhaustive research, this book is a fascinating look at how our Commanders in Chief had stayed in shape -- dating back to the early 19th century. As a fan of Finkel's biography of NBA player Nate Robinson, as well as his magazine column writing, I was certain this book would be an informative and entertaining read. And it was.

Mostly there, but obviously not reviewed by Steve Vai

I'm nowhere near the level of Steve Vai on guitar, but I like to get his tab books to see what he's doing and try to learn some of it. That said, after reviewing this book against the recordings, it's pretty close. However, one song that really sticks out to me as not correct (at least how it is written) is Gravity Storm. There are a ton of notations for using the bar when I know for a fact Steve plays this almost all with bends. I was standing a foot away from him in a sound check, and took a video of him, playing Gravity Storm and he used the bar once during the entire song. He even talks about this song in interviews and how it was like a workout for his hand because of all of the bending. My point is, it may sound close, but it's not what he's actually playing. That leads me to question the accuracy of rest of the book.

Worth the buy

I Pre-ordered the book, and I received it perfectly on time.

A few notes about the book, it appears that the transcription was done by a very talented transcriber, but he/she did not have any background experience with Vai's work. It very well takes into account the proper fingering positions to achieve the desired tones, and I have yet to find a true error (in terms of the note being wrong, not taking into account the techniques used) in the music, but there are abundant errors within the tabs itself, stemming from the aforementioned techniques. Vai has made a strong point of the use of his pre-bending to make a Dive sound during Gravity Storm, emphasizing that the recording guitar was incapable of instantly-applied modulation of tuning via the Whammy bar (it didn't have a tremolo system installed). He did make heavy use of the Whammy pedal later in that same song though, so I guess I can see why the Transcriber would have been confused. (but only if he/she has never heard of Steve Vai.)

Like I said, I haven't yet found an error in the notes represented, and it doesn't look rushed. Overall, its a great piece of work that deserves your attention!

Almost gets full stars.

Mark Haigh-Hutchinson is a senior software engineer at Retro Studios Inc., based in Austin, Texas. He has designed and programmed video games professionally since 1984 and as a hobby since 1979. He has contributed to over 40 published games in roles as varied as programmer, designer, and project leader. Some of the more notable titles he has worked on include several Star Wars games: Rogue Squadron, Episode 1: Racer, Shadows of the Empire, and Rebel Assault, as well as other games such as Zombies Ate My Neighbors and The Secret of Monkey Island 2. Most recently Mark was responsible for the camera systems and player control in the award winning Metroid Prime and its sequel Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

First of all - poor style - author managed to use the same word in multiple meanings within one sentence. Punctuation errors everywhere.

Repetitions, repetitions, repetitions... The same words, the same phrases, the same sentences throughout the book. What was most annoying for me - paragraphs with the same content, one after another!

Author clearly knows the topic, but he lacks any writing skills. Most of the contents of this book can be summarized into one sentence: Care must be taken when dealing with design and implementation of camera system.

First 1/3 of the book contains high-level overview of all camera-related topics with a promise for more in next chapters. Next 1/3 is more detailed overview of the same information. Last 1/3 is real content. So you get the same content 3 times.

Definitely not worth the price (it should cost 10-15 dollars).

This is a fascinating, beautifully written, and thoroughly researched book that examines our 19th century economy through the lens of patent litigation, and in particular, the high-stakes battles of Alexander Graham Bell to enforce his patents on the telephone. Full disclosure: I am a patent attorney. I typically would not read a book like this for fun or relaxation, given my work-day reading load. But this book currently has a home on my bedside table along with some pretty lowbrow novels as well as books on horseback riding and tai chi. Beauchamp tells a fascinating tale and you don't have to be a lawyer, scientist or engineer to engage with the story. Highly recommended.

It's targeted at a very inexperienced audience, and so (IMO) omits many details and explanation that would help the reader answer "what-if" questions (e.g. "What happens if I change the sample code in this way?") and get a deeper understanding of what's going on and how to make it do something specific to your needs. Disclaimer: I'm a veteran software/hardware developer, so I know I'm not part of the target audience, but still I think the book could dig somewhat deeper, like some other similar titles I've read.

Elizabeth Woodward is a Senior Software Consultant with IBM Quality Software Engineering under the Corporate Headquarters Office of Innovation and Technology. Elizabeth coaches distributed software development teams to improve efficiency and effectiveness of their development practices. She has co-chaired the IBM Academy of Technology Conference on Agile Methods, teaches courses on Disciplined Agile Development, and co-leads the IBM Agile Community.

Steffan Surdek is a User Experience Lead and Agile Champion in IBM. He has worked in the software development industry for over fifteen years as a software developer, architect, project manager, and team leader. Steffan has managed and coordinated large-scale projects with teams distributed in as many as five countries--India, Egypt, Israel, China, and Canada. He coaches distributed agile teams, is a co-leader of the IBM Agile Community, and teaches Disciplined Agile Development workshops. He is an active member of the Montreal Agile Community and has written on agile methods and globally distributed development for developerWorks and Dr. Dobbs Journal. Disappointing

If you have no Agile background, then this book covers some of the basics. If you are a actually after information on Agile in large Distributed and complex integrated environments (as claimed by the authors) then you will be very much disappointed. However, you will learn that you need to be aware that other countries are in fact in different time zones - this seems to be a key issue for IBM (the author) as the time zone issue is repeated ad nauseam throughout this book. In fact many of the key points (which are mostly around telephone conferencing issues to India) are repeated over and over.

It's how they really do it!

There are a lot of books about agile software development. There are a lot of books about scrum. Most of them are pretty general. Of course, they have examples and case studies. What I like about this book is that it is a real reflection of how things are done at IBM. Whether you like IBM or not, you have a chance to peek inside the big blue box and see how they make things tick. I really, really appreciate that chance, so I applaud the work of the authors, who have not only collaborated to write the book but also invited their colleagues at IBM to contribute. I was also impressed by their decision to donate all royalties to charity. Well done!

This a really basic book about Scrum and things you have to keep in mind when you handle several teams. Tips are obvious about the team location, time zones, and culture, but it really does not put any example or situation that support additional knowledge.

About the Author
Anthony Grey became a foreign correspondent with Reuters after beginning his career in journalism in Norfolk, England, where he was born and educated. I was a little bit disappointed in Tokyo Bay

Having recently read Saigon by this author, I was eager to read Tokyo Bay. I was a little bit disappointed in Tokyo Bay. The characters didn't seem to be developed as well as in Saigon and the ending sort of left me hanging - a sequel in the works perhaps? The editing in Tokyo Bay is not as good as in Saigon. Syntax errors and missing words detract from the readability of Tokyo Bay. But, with that said, it is a good read.

After reading Saigon, I was so impressed with this author that I looked forward to reading more of his books. However Tokyo Bay was a real disappointment. A really silly plot with unbelievable characters, unfortunately I gave up after the first couple of hundred pages. My husband read the whole book and told me not to bother wasting my time by continuing.

A plodder that then leaves serious plot lines unresolved

I rarely write reviews and even more so bad ones. But don't waste your time on this one. I had high hopes at the start, but the plot went in some unbelievable directions and then left several major plot lines and character issues completely unresolved at the end. At the end I viewed it as a waste of my time.
