A cute idea

This is a cute concept, and seeing how I'm reading stories aloud to my son, I thought I'd give this a go.

Cassie finds a pair of glasses during a sleepover. They look a lot like hers, but they have an incredible ability - they allow her to see fairies. She hates to give them back, but convinced they must belong to fellow party-goer, Bianca, she seeks her out. But Bianca says they aren't hers. Cassie keeps looking, and though the fairies largely ignore her, there are some that pop up that seem to want something from her.

I have to say, I wasn't terribly impressed, though I love the premise and the idea that there are multiple magical items that allow you to sense fairies. Maybe I'm just not cut out for reading middle grade stories, because it just felt a bit patronizing. At a few points, Cassie tells others about the glasses, but though no one else can use the glasses, they end up believing Cassie, which I find a little unbelievable, though I suppose it sends a good message. The story was okay, but the end was a bit of a let-down. Overall my impression wasn't great, but you can judge for yourself.

wearing glasses isn't fun... until...!

I really enjoyed this story! Hmmm... I might not have minded wearing my glasses as a girl IF I had a pair of these! This is a sweet story that's hard to put down...

This is the story of Cassie, a new girl at school, who hates wearing glasses... until she grabs a pair of glasses that look just like her own - but with a BIG difference! She can see fairies! I won't say more to ruin the story - you need to read it for yourself!

Ms Sorensen has created a world where fairies make themselves known... how and when they want! What I love about the story is that the characters are so well developed that you feel what they are going through, and you remember what it was like to be that age with your friends! She has given the air of innocence, curiosity, wonder, and just a tinge of fear of the unknown - all wrapped together to immerse you into the tale. We see that Cassie's kind heart brings her to try and help Bianca. It's a story that makes you feel good!

Based on this and the other book I had read in this series, I am definitely looking forward to reading more of these stories when I need an escape!

I LOVED reading this Book!!!
When I was reading Fairy Eyeglasses, I felt I was in the book, like I the main character going through all of the predicaments and happy, sad, angry, and all of the emotions that she was feeling.
I recommend Fairy Eyeglasses to readers 6 - and all ages above.

New edition released!

Carson and Moo have thoroughly reworked this book, removing or revising Morris' contributions and adding much new material for the second edition. Some sections are rearranged, and there are a few entirely new sections. I read the original book straight through a few years ago, and I haven't found anything else that does quite as good a job of staying on top of the current scholarship while defending generally conservative evangelical views on the authorship, date, setting, purpose, and other backgrounds sorts of issues on each NT book. I expect the updated edition to be equally thorough and more up-to-date on recent trends in NT scholarship.

Particularly of note is the section on the New Perspective on Paul, which Morris and Carson have both been on the forefront of interacting with (from a more traditional perspective in both cases, though both have been willing to acknowledge that we have learned something from the NPP). They call this section brief in the introduction, but it's 11 pages, a fair amount of space compared to how much room they give to most topics. They have also provided a lengthy addition covering the history of interpretation of the NT, from the early Christians to contemporary biblical scholarship. They've also expanded of added more on the content of each book, something reviewers complained about in the first edition, and there's also a little bit on the social science approaches to NT studies, something that wasn't very far along in the original book. All in all, the new edition sounds as if it should be excellent.

They've removed the dust jacket and replaced it with a visually appealing cover on the book itself, and they've increased the margin size significantly, both of which suit its primary use as a seminary textbook. They list the intended audience as seminary students in the first and second years, but a studious enough person can read it for profit without the additional seminary background. I read the entire first edition without any seminary training at all. It's certainly not the level of detail a scholar would want for an exhaustive treatment of every issue, but the bibliographies and footnotes can provide further reading to get exactly that, and it would be ill-suited for students if it tried to do too much.

This has been the standard evangelical NT introduction for quite a while, and as of the revision its place will be secured for quite a while.

A Fine Introduction

As others have noted, this NT Introduction is a standard introductory text from an evangelical perspective. In this updated version, Carson and Moo add some good stuff on canonicity that was not part of the original Carson/Moo/Morris edition. Most of the remaining material is similar.

As can be expected, the analysis and conclusions in this Introduction are decidedly conservative on questions of authorship, canonicity, original situation of the writings, and historical reliability of the documents. The authors helpfully analyze many contemporary challenges to evangelical understandings of the NT so that the beginner and intermediate levels of readers will gain a good introductory grasp of the many bones of contention that exist over many issues in virtually every book of the NT. Moo's strong work in Romans and James, coupled with Carson's strong work on the Fourth Gospel, can be particularly seen in this book's treatment of these canonical documents.

One could have hoped for a more lengthy treatment of contemporary issues, and one could also have hoped for more robust bibliographies upon which the reader could proceed with more in-depth study. But because this is an introductory work, it is probably inappropriate to expect such things in this kind of treatment. The beginner who wants to develop a good working knowledge of NT scholarship from an evangelical perspective will likely be quite satisfied with what they find in here.

Thorough and Provocative

In this new edition of Intro to the NT Carson and Moo have significantly improved the work they initially published with Leon Morris (who has since passed away). The chapters are reorganized, the margins are wider, and the material has expanded to include the contribution of works published since the first edition. Having used both editions for coursework and personal study, I find the second edition far superior. While the layout of the first edition was doable, the second is much roomier and suitable for study. More than all these considerations, the authors superbly point the reader to Christ, to become like him. I have been challenged not only academically as I've read this work, I have been also been convicted spiritually.

What If....You Could be Death

What if you could kill people and be Death himself.

What if cancer and all the worlds diseases were healed and our understanding of how to heal everybody was so great that you could pretty much save anyone from practically anything that would have killed them.

In stark contrast to people’s fears, the Thunderhead did not seize power. Instead, it was people who came to realize that it was far better suited to run things than politicians. ****

What if selected humans were now charged with culling the population and causing the deaths of those chosen. That they themselves had to choose who to kill and perform the execution becoming walking death.

What if you were chosen to be apprenticed to one of these people and learn how to kill.

What if…… well you get the gist.

I used to read a lot of YA but after a while so much of it seemed the same. After the fifteenth time in the book someone released a breath they didn’t know they were holding or dollface’s eyes became darker (cuz that is what happens when you lust after someone) and she threw away everything special about herself for Jerkwad A I was over it. But then I found Neal Shusterman (NS). I think that NS is the king of what if…. He takes something from our society today and tweaks it extremely to the best/worst case scenario and TaH-DaH magic.

Neal Shusterman has been on my autobuy list since I read his Unwind series which is my favorite completely YA and Dystopian series to date. While this is completely different in the world and the characters one thing remains the same. This book is for people who like to ponder the “what ifs” of the world and society. Like….

*** To date, the oldest living human being is somewhere around three hundred, but only because we are still so close to the Age of Mortality. I wonder what life will be like a millennium from now, when the average age will be nearer to one thousand. Will we all be renaissance children, skilled at every art and science, because we’ve had the time to master them? Or will boredom and slavish routine plague us even more than it does today, giving us less of a reason to live limitless lives? I dream of the former, but suspect the latter. ****

This story follows Rowan and Cirta as they start their internship of a year with Sythe Faraday learning everything there is to know about what it takes to be a killer of men. Which is less about learning how to kill, although there is some of that, and more about finding a path they can live with. Watching people die isn’t as easy as one would think. There are moral quandaries and it seems that not all the Scythes believe in the same things. Could it be in this society where a fraction of the people die compared to the Age of Mortality that there are things going on in the politics of death that might lead to disaster???

As the story delves into the deeper politics of death and how the world might be changing I liked seeing how a few of the different Scythes treated the responsibility of killing and how each seemed to have a different process and a different way to deal with families and after affects. People are people and it seems that if you give some of them enough power corruption is bound to bleed through.

There is a very small aspect of romance between a few characters but nothing overdone and it is definitely not the focal point of the story. The focal point is the society and how Citra and Rowan are trying to find a way to change it in their own way or else one might have to kill the other at the end of the apprenticeship.

There is a little bit of time needed for the set up to the story but there was also enough going on that I never lost interest. I became emotionally connected to Rowan and Citra in their very different struggles and I really enjoyed all the world details that made be question if you could live forever would you really want to?

This will be a duology or I prefer the term duet and I was extremely shocked but some of the happenings going into the final quarter of the book. But I adore where the book let off for the next installment and I am really excited to see what Shusterman has planned since there seemed to be some beginnings to a few things and with NS anything can happen and you will probably find your jaw on the floor when it does.

This is probably closer to a 4.25 read but I kept thinking about it days later because I love the What If of the story and I know what NS is capable of so it is a 5 star read for me.

GREAT STORY.

Finally, a smart, well thought out story that explores deeper issues. The author expertly sets up obstacles that the characters figure out in a way that leaves the reader wishing they had figured a way out of that trap. As exciting a debut as Divergent and Hunger Games, but I am optimistic that this author won't limp to the finish line, if he plans sequels. There is room for more story but, this novel concludes in a way the feels complete. The only knock I have is the "journal entries" which serve as interstitials between chapters. These entries do provide good info, but that's like the Criminologist/Narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It takes you out of the moment and is essentially (boring) a momentum killer. Perhaps the best indicator of the quality of the story is this: I plan to seek out other works by Mr. Shusterman and add them to my library. One of the best discoveries of books I have made in a long time.

A great premise weighed down by "adolescent undertones"

First off this is a great read. I enjoyed the book start to finish and will enjoy its successor. The premise is original and offers interesting perspective in what it means to live in a time of "immortality".

But

Shoehorned teenage love just to be placed in a young adult category makes the author feel more like a marketer than a writer. I would be reading segments of the book and find myself drifting off realizing I was reading a cheap plea for a Hollywood screen play, other than what could an interesting and original universe with characters that develop and grow as the reader progresses.

That being said if you'd like a quick read with a great premise please give this a read. I will be worth the time..... Maybe not the money

A real-world, compact, ready-reckoner for SQL Developers & Administrators alike

One of the best things I like about the book is that it contains Vinod & Pinal's trademark simple, flowing language. For engineers already having practical, hands-on experience on SQL Server, this book is a refresher course on the basics. For students, the questions in this book offer a great way to revise things.

Although the name contains the word "Interview", this book is much more than just an interview questions guide. As you start reading the book, what you realize immediately is that this small package covers almost everything under the SQL Server umbrella, and caters to multiple audiences of multiple proficiency levels. The book is a ready-reckoner for every SQL Server developer & administrator. When reading the book, I found myself thinking about a concept that I hadn't touched in a while, or which I was not sure about. In such cases, I went over to the reference links at the end of such questions that are available where one can go to for additional information.

Excellent book to master the SQL server Basics and Gain confidence before a SQL server based Interview.

Though SQL server is an huge ocean - this book does justice to touch-base on every different aspect of the product. Starting from the basic concepts and then discussing Tricky questions, authors Pinal Dave and Vinod Kumar lucidly explains each aspect in a Question Answer Format.

Personally, i liked the Tricky question section because it made me think about the topic at hand. And i believe, this exercise of thinking on my feet after reading the question will help me tackle questions during interviews that require quick thinking. And for questions which i knew, i learned the perfect way of answering them.

And every chapter, ends with a summary (called points to ponder) which is an excellent place to reflect upon and test one's knowledge. And even if you are not planning to go for interview's in near future - this book is a handy reference for all FAQ's you may have on a day-to-day basis.

Perfect for any who is a SQL server Database Developer or a SQL server DBA or planning to be one!

Just Right

It starts off a little slow but ends very strong.

The last two chapters were very entertaining and instructive.

There are not very many variations (I'm not a big John Nunn fan) which I liked, as it keeps you focused
on the topic.

The material was not too basic or too advanced.

For the most part, complete games were presented.

It is the first Beim book I've read, and would now like to read his other books.

The Kindle edition has at least 3 errors in it that shouldn't be there.
1. Topalov - Kramnik Linares 1998 had the wrong diagram position - it used the last example diagram instead.
2. Kramnik - Nunn Germany 1994 Black's 20th move should be c6 not e6.
3. Smyslov - Tal Bled 1959 - There should be a pawn on h2.

So the proofreader(s) or the software used to convert from book to kindle only gets 2-3 stars.

It took me 20.5 hrs to finish the book.

But with a bit more diagrams would be even better. For beginners, following mid-size variations is not that easy. And revision in some games is needed
