The Best Source on the Middle East

For the sake of full disclosure, I know Dr. Daniel Pipes.
Those who want to understand the past and present of the Middle East will want to read this book by the premier American scholar in the field. Like his other works, it is well-researched, carefully thought out, and highly readable. Those who want to keep up with coming events and forthcoming scholarship will want to subscribe to both his online journal and the periodic articles sent out for free.

I have read other accounts in the past regarding the events at Luft Stalag III, but none from Mark's PM-focused perspective.

An author's perspective on the journey to complete the book

Project Lessons from The Great Escape (Stalag Luft III) is the fourth book in the Lessons from History series. It follows the evolution of a Prisoner of War escape from a World War II camp and applies lessons to today's business and project environment. The book makes business recommendations that are backed up by its exhaustively detailed case study of a project team working to achieve a common goal.�

When I completed Churchill's Adaptive Enterprise I had been looking for a while for a follow up in the series but a somewhat simpler historical project. I set some criteria which included a straightforward story line, a well defined beginning, middle, and end. I was also looking for a difficult situation, a dire environment to launch a project, where the political support was lacking, and there would be a lot of groups trying to close it down. It had to be an event that was run as a project and relied more on human ingenuity and perseverance, than established practices and tools.

The idea of using the Great Escape was a true moment of realization, and I was very excited in getting it started. When I first considered the idea I was concerned it could be somewhat removed from what is generally considered "a project" in the business world. It was the least obvious project I could think of, and most people would not consider it to be a project. After sometime to further research it and run the idea by a few people including my publisher Kevin Aguanno at MMPUBS I became convinced and was convinced it was a good idea.

My analysis showed that this event went through a very meticulous and an enormous level planning. The escape committee that planned the escape instigated a project of a monumental scale. They were scaling up previous projects by 20 fold. Nothing was easy, almost everything was a challenge to the project team. An inhospitable and inconducive environment was in place to numb prisoners into boredom and inactivity. These were truly dire circumstances to launch a project from. Hence, the appeal as today's projects seem tame and easy in comparison.

The publisher set up a challenge and suggested that one of the criteria of in writing the book was to look at the project from the 9 project management knowledge areas of the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK), developed in 1983. The question was whether they would hold up in project that preceeded them by 40 years. It would help establish how well founded these were. Was there evidence that projects of the past followed these intuitively, in the days before the project management discipline was established. Gut feel told me it did, and I wanted to determine if and how well the project followed these knowledge areas. I will let you make the determination.

The most enganging PM book ever written

Excellent book, I almost read it cover to cover after viewing the original movie. The actual story portrays the harsh realities the POWs faced in real life as opposed to the heroics of Steve McQueen in the movie.

Having studied Project Management in several courses this book is the most interesting application of project management I have read. Thanks for an interesting read.

Could not put the book down

An entertaining and informative book that connects the Great Escape to the PMBoK (project management book of knowledge) knowledge areas in a way that teaches you without sounding like a classroom textbook. Our department's group of PMPs will be using this book as reference during our weekly lunch and learn sessions to discuss how we can better plan our contingencies. The book has taught me that almost any obstacle can be overcome with some basic brainstorming and resourcefulness. I would highly recommend this book.

Larry Schechter began playing fantasy baseball in 1992, experiencinggreat success over the ensuing two decades. He is a six-time winner ofthe renowned Tout Wars experts league, a one-time winner of the USA Today-sponsored League of Alternative Baseball Reality (LABR), and has competed in theFantasy Sports Trade Association experts league. In all, through the2013 season, Larry has managed twenty-two teams in these leagues and has won nine league championships. He has also been successful in fantasyfootball and basketball, currently ranking 14th on the National FantasyFootball Championship (NFFC) career winnings list at $110,700. Thefounder and president of a successful financial-services company, hefulfilled a longstanding goal in 2003, when he began to perform stand-up comedy. From 2003 to 2011, he performed at many comedy clubs throughout the Northeast.

Don't need to rely on "experts" anymore, Schechter teaches you how to do it yourself.

I enjoyed reading through Winning Fantasy Baseball, and will continue to reference back to it as I prepare for my drafts, and throughout the season. It is absolutely applicable to both hardcore fantasy players, and beginners. It is dry informational type reading and at times can get pretty nerdy with various player value formulas etc. What this book allowed me to do was learn how to create my own player rankings and values based off my specific league settings and roster construction. What this allows me to do is enter the draft with a rankings list and dollar values that are tailored to my league. I no longer have to print out the same player rankings that everybody else carries into the draft. Developing my own draft guides allows me to see where certain values can be found in a draft. And VALUES is the central theme to this book, and to winning your fantasy leagues.

It's what any decent fantasy player should be reading. Adapt or die.

I bought this book the first weekend it came out. I feel guilty for not writing a review sooner, but I was busy murdering people in small stakes online drafts. While it's a huge help in having a better draft day, the real joy from the book comes from having a new perspective from which to look at a draft. He explains how to take the total amount of money to be spent in an auction by all the teams combined, and allocate a portion of it to each player. Once you have the league laid out in front of you, with a clear idea of each player's value, a draft becomes a fun exercise in getting the most out of it. I used to leave a draft with a vague sense of whether it went well or not. I now leave it with clear rankings of all the teams involved. He applies his ideas to snake drafts and in-season changes, but my view of auction drafts was so drastically changed by this book that I'd have to say that's the centerpiece of the nice table he's set for the fantasy baseball fan. Not only is the information valuable, it's a fun read over a rainy day or two.

Lots of good advice but not enough to become Larry Schechter

It was a very illuminating book from a master of the game. He covers projections, values/rankings, and in-season management. The only issue I had with it is he doesn't really detail his projection system but rather seems to indicate he does it by intuition, some of the rules of thumb which he shares. Yet, apparently his projections are very accurate. If that's the case, then Larry really is just more talented than the rest of us and we have no chance against the likes of him. If, however, he used Sabermetric data like the rest of us likely would to create projections, then I'd have faith that I could be successful consistently.

For now, I'm using projections from various sources, averaging them out, and creating my own valuation system based on SGPs like Larry indicates. I will certainly use his advice on in-season management and keepers (we actually have a 2 keeper draft league that will redraft at the All-Star Break) and hope all that gained knowledge results in a fantasy win this year and for years to come.
