An excellent book for anyone studying tai chi whether a beginner or expert.

I have have been a student of numerous martial art systems over the last 60 years years and this excellent book is one of the texts I studied when taking the Yang system of Tai Chi from a master of the Yang system. In time, I was awarded my teaching certificate in Tai Chi, but I now teach a seated version of Tai Chi because of my limited physical ability at this time.

Like any martial art book, one cannot master the actual techniques without receiving lessons under a competent and certified Tai Chi instructor. The information and lessons in this book teach the essential philosophical basis of Tai Chi principles which is invaluable for anyone studying this art. Some of the many topics covered include the following: Tai Chi Chuan Ching and Lun, Insights into the practice of thirteen postures, song of hand pushing, five character secret, Essentials of the practice of push hands and Yangs ten important points.

In conclusion, this book is a true Tai Chi Classic that every serious student of Tai Chi will benefit from reading.

Vegan diet is the way to go

Malik Hazima tells us of his own experience in eating a conventional unhealthy diet that unfortunately a lot of folks are on. He tells about is parents who died early and his grandparents who rarely consumed meat who lived into the 80s and 90s. Whenever Malik ate right, avoiding foods of animal origin, his health improved. He immediately lost weight, diabetes symptoms went away as did high blood pressure. He got off his vegetarian diet and medical problems gradually started to reappear. As a vegan he's even more health, planning to live to 100. As for the recipe part of the book, I like how he included Ingredients, Preparation and Nutritional Values with each recipe.

I am very pleased with this book

This is a marvelous book. I will admit I am not a vegan, but I am always looking for ways to add more vegetables to my diet. The recipes don't call for anything exotic, and most of them sound tasty when I read them, though I'm sure I'll be adding a lot more garlic. The instructions are clear and simple, so even the most basic cook should be able to make most of the recipes with minimal equipment.

There are a few translation issues, and the book does need a bit of editing. But that is NOT affecting my review, and in fact if the author and translator would like, I would freely offer my services to clean it up a bit.

Excellent for anyone who wants to cook in a more healthy, and honestly, frugal manner, and you don't have to be a vegan to enjoy the recipes.

Vegan easy and healthy

As a vegetarian for the past 30 years, I have gradually been cutting out all animal products. I love heavily spiced foods as well. I have already tried one of the recipes and am thrilled with the results. This book will stay at the top of my list for healthy, vegan and delicious meals. Healthy, vegan food does NOT have to taste like cardboard. Highly recommended!

Very detailed diagrams, well researched hypothesis.This book is worth reading and seeing all the equations that Evan uses. In this book Evan presents many new ideas and concepts about consciousness and how it relates to space and time. This may be a break thru in Quantum relativity it is also an inspirational story of a man following his dreams and sharing his passion for physics with the world. Check it out for your self.

Alpha = omega= delta=1=1=1 is what the book says. To me it seems to be very meaningless. Someone might have written a book with a title like this one has and it could be fascinating and significant. This one is not.

A survey of the succeeding two centuries gives the background to Song Iyong's instrument, identified as a demonstrational armillary sphere in the Koryo University Museum.

About the Author
Trevor M Letcher is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is a past Director of the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics and his research involves the thermodynamics of liquid mixtures and energy from landfill. He was awarded the South African Chemical Institute’s Gold medal in 1999 and in 2000 he was awarded the South African Gold medal by the South African Association for the Advancement of Science. He has published over 250 papers in peer review journals and has edited, co-edited and written eleven books in his research and related fields. His latest books include Unraveling Environmental Disasters (2012), Materials for a Sustainable Future (2012), Waste (2011), Heat Capacities (2010), Climate Change (2009) and Future Energy (2008).

His leisure activities involve regular hikes with the Mendip Ramblers, woodwork (long case clocks) and wood turning, gardening at home and on his allotment, theatre, reading and playing golf.

One of the difficulties of the field we call "environmental studies" is that seemingly everything and anything is included within its scope. What aspect of humanities, social science, biology, chemistry, engineering, economics, et cetera, is NOT affected by and influencing the environment?

This book, useful as a text in an introductory environmental studies course, makes this point very clear. The authors state in their introductory comments, "Environmental Studies establishes knowledge of special natural phenomena and specific human institutional beliefs and practices. It then mediates between them. Environmental Studies characterizes complex natural conditions on Earth and describes the interface of human with non-human activity" (p. 2).

In additional, "A working description of Environmental Studies thus involves several levels. First, Environmental Studies pursues and draws upon individual disciplines to understand the constituent elements of larger problems and solutions. Then, to grasp and define such problems and issues, Environmental Studies combines the results of an appropriate set of these disciplines and may even foster new ones. Finally, in practical terms, Environmental Studies brings together relevant disciplines and concepts to address environmental issues and to resolve [or attempt to resolve] environmental problems" (p. 3).

What are these environmental problems, and potential solutions?

You've got 950 pages of them in this book.

All of the many readings are rather short (2-3 pages). Sometimes, this is because the article itself was short. Other times, the editors have whittled the article to its fundamentals. still in the original author's own words, but edited for brevity.

The authors focus on 10 interconnected issues:

- climate shock
- species in danger
- nuclear power
- biotechnology and GMOs
- sustainable development
- deforestation
- war and peace
- globalization
- wilderness
- the urban environment

That's part one. Part two discusses "foundational disciplines and topics":

- biological interactions (biodiversity, soil and agriculture, air and water, energy, and toxicology)
- human dimensions (the "inner life"; ethics, philosophy, and gender; poetry; history; and nature writing)
- social connections (politics and public policy, law and environmental justice, economics, human population, and anthropology)
- conviction and action

The topics above are also coordinated with the 10 general topics, so the reader can "see" the interdisciplinary nature of problem definitions and solutions.

From the biblical chapter of Genesis, to Silent Spring, to Chief Seattle's speech, and all the way to the environmental root and consequences of war, this volume has material of interest to all.

Very readable, interesting, well-organized, and highly recommended.

A Great Read & Excellent Resource

This book is a compilation of highly readable selections about humans and the natural world. It includes excerpts from the best classic and current writings in the field. I had feared it would be too technical, but it has quickly become one of my favorite reads and reference sources.

I'm a resource manager and also teach a survey course in environmental science. It's impossible to be an expert in environmental science, because the world we live in is far beyond our comprehension. As I tell students, studying the environment should be humbling. We earthlings know just enough about the earth to be dangerous, until we learn to manage ourselves and our societies.

This volume brings human and technical perspectives on the environment together, from the perpectives of history, anthropology, forestry, agriculture, engineering, theology, biology, medicine and other disciplines. Enjoy!

Environmental Book that Makes Sense to All Parties

Environment: An Interdisciplinary Anthology is an excellent overview of all sides of the conversation about the environment today and in America's past. Its relatively short, very, very readable collection of essays gives readers a history of the issues, how the U.S. came to the place we are today with environmental groups opposing "working" groups and industry that must use the earth's resources to grow their industry and the economy. Common sense, poetry, humanity, economic insight, philosophy, realism, and idealism --all these and more characterize this book's balanced approach to readings about the environment.
Moreover, the editors' preface explains the 3 sections of the book and ways to read the 10 Case Studies with Interconnections and Discipline-specific readings. Don't try to read the book cover-to-cover. Follow their suggestions. My students in a Green Writing college course really like this book. It is so accessible to all kinds of readers and thinkers.
