About the Author
James R. Evans is a professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His served as president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, the American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

The book is exactly what I needed but the delivery was a different and disappointing story...

I needed the book for a project and decided to order from Amazon through my Prime account. The book itself was just fine but how it got here was not exactly what I would expected.

The first delivery through USPS was late by a whole day. The heavy paperback book was in an over-sized, very thinly-padded envelope that clearly not designed to protect the heavy content. The envelope was badly broken at the seal and US Postal Services had to taped up the battered and abused envelope ensuring the book wouldn't just fall out. The $125 book was scratched and dent, showing visible battle scars from the abuses taken during transportation all because of total lack of protection.

I contacted Amazon's customer service and a replacement book was order and sent the same day. Unfortunately, it arrived the next day in the same "over-sized, thinly-padded envelope"! Fortunately UPS saved the day this time because it treated the overnight package with far more dignity and respect than Post Office did. The book was still damaged but far less than the first one. I needed the book and honestly did not believe Amazon would change the packaging so I kept the second book.

It seemed like Amazon's shipping protocols called for books to be sent in an envelope. It was acceptable as long as the envelope itself was capable of handling the weight of the content. In this case, someone most definitely picked the wrong envelope for the task! Using Post Office as the first option was yet another poor decision because unlike UPS or FedEx, USPS delivery totally lacked accountability for on-time delivery.

I was sad to see such poor execution and handling of a Prime account order on a rather delicate item that was over $100. What would have happened to other Prime account orders? There was very little care and accountability put into the process. Although customer service cleaned up the mess at the back-end of the process, the entire incident could have easily been avoided completely. Mr. Bezos should hired better quality control people that would most certainly save him a few dollars toward bottom line.

I rated the book itself a 4-star for meeting my needs and Amazon's customer service a 5-star for quick decision making. I also rated the Amazon delivery service a 1-star for lack of quality control and not learning from past errors and mistakes.

Consider the Paper and the Quality of Shipping Before Ordering

My book arrived damaged, which was disappointing. It was in a plastic bag and the cover and some of the pages were quite damaged, both inside and out. I have frequently ordered books from overseas and haven't ever had a problem before. The pictures are very pretty and I love that there is a colored picture to guide my learning to color flowers. However, and to me, most importantly, the paper is horrible. It is markedly thinner than a Creative Haven Coloring book, and I think even thinner than a regular Dover book. If you print your pics on to nicer paper, you won't mind, but I like to color in the book. I have the exotic flower book coming from a different seller and I'll be interested how they ship it and in what condition it arrives. I'm sorry to say that when I add the damaged condition and the horrible paper, I can only give it 2 stars.

One of the coolest adult coloring books out there! What makes this coloring book different are the colored pictures in the book that are there for you to try your professional hand at matching and shading the same colors! I bought a professional 120 Blick colored pencil set and now I have a chance to prove my skills! Great buy would definitely buy another book from Kew!

My second Kew book

This is my second Kew Gardens book. I'm a high-intermediate colorist and I love coloring flowers. I also have the Kew Gardens Exotic Plants Coloring Book which is more challenging the this one but this book let's me do a picture faster because it's a bit simpler. I wish the paper was a little better, but it isn't bad either. All in all, I'm pleased with these books

A must read for anyone that communicates online or on paper

If you do any kind of writing for your job buy this book and read it cover to cover. With that said my review follows:
There are so many positives in this book that I will list the negatives first, there are few and very minor at that.
The cover has got to go. It does not represent the depth and wealth of the information inside. To be honest, it looked so poorly thought out and old, I felt the contents of the book must be too. Thankfully, I dropped my bias and was very pleasantly surprized.
The other negative may be my own personal preference, but I like the footnote detail at the bottom of the page, so when I see it I don't have to scoot to the end of the chapter to see what it is. This is how good the book was, I read all the footnotes and references too.
Marlana Coe has created a book that I hope not only do Technical writers from all over read, but Human Factors professionals too. As a fanatic-pursuer of documentation meeting its goal to communicate, this book says it all. The usability measurement on documentation is whether or not it allows the author to communicate to the reader and Marlana Coe shows you just how to do that. In fact, she shows you while doing that herself.
I bought this book because as a Human Factors professional, I find we do not practice what we preach. We review a product and come up with wonderful ideas to make it better and then proceed to hide that in a document that is not geared for the reader. Many technical reports, even the ones that only have a small group of customers, don't meet those customers needs. There are no pictures, tables and diagrams and worst of all no logical organization for the reader to create a structure around the information. The documents are geared for the writer to regurgitate data, not for the reader to absorb it. Granted this is not all, but too much of a majority in a group of people that should know better. Most human factors professional know, how to increase usability of everyone else's product but their own: the technical report they create on products they review. This book bridges that gap, for HF professionals especially. Yes, I'm including myself in this category (I did buy the book after all).
For all the rest of you, this gives you reasons for all the practices that good technical writers should use. From the amount of white space to use to the number of fonts and colors. There are also suggestions on organization and on construction of these documents. One section discussed content and the importance of context of usage. This is something, I never really thought of that much. (Oops).
Another thing the author has done was fashion a book on a technical subject and made it readable. This is something she also covers in her book. Her language is natural and she has not fallen into the trap of using technical words or ones that may escape the average readers vocabulary.
In a word: Fantastic!

Fantastic book!

This book is extremely well done, and it can be applied to much more than writing. I think that the bulk of it applies to almost any kind of design, i.e getting to know the users, their needs, abilities, experience, etc. and then involving them in the design, getting feedback, establishing a partnership, etc. It's just the kind of up from the trenches stuff that managers would be wise to listen to but very rarely do. You can definitely sense the frustration the author has in technical writers being the band-aid applied to poor product design and cost-cutting, and she offers concrete alternatives when you have limitations.
I also love the recursiveness of it, in that she is writing the same thing she is also describing, so talk about reading between the lines! I could read it over and over, each time appreciating more and more how she followed her own advice.
This book is what I always look for in a book, because it starts from the beginning and ends at the end, with a clear trail of how it got there. The supporting introduction, glossary, index, notes and references are very well done.

Great insite into the Reader

Coe does a great job of introducing the reader to the writer. There are so many things that we as writers don't think about, or take for granted when we write. This book really opened my eyes not only as a writer but also as a reader to the importance of understanding how people read, understand, learn, and absorb information.

A cut above all the rest

Every generation of readers of spank stories has that one author who is a cut above all rest. Porn writers extraordinaire from the past have included Bob Vickery, Tom Caffrey, John Preston, Lars Eighner and small handful of others. Today's generation has Natty Soltesz.

College Dive Bar, 1 AM is Soltesz's latest offering and joins the ranks of his other works that expertly chronicle the lives of the sexually free college male. Readers familiar with Soltesz's themes will enjoy the frat brothers who get it on with each other, drunk guys who fling inhibitions aside and other aspects of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell culture that goes on behind dormitory doors on campuses across America. Soltesz captures each of these moments expertly.

The magic in Soltesz's writing does not lie in highly-charged sexual horseplay of the 20-something male, but in Soltesz's ability to get the reader to suspend his belief system and buy into the idea these guys are not all super endowed, but have sex many times a day. On top of that, Soltesz imbues his stories with a sense of humor and, at times, tenderness and humanity.

I thought the last couple stories in this volume were rushed and didn't hold quite capture the magic like the majority of the book, otherwise I would have given it five stars. However, this is one collection I will pick and read again and, like Soltesz's collection, Backwoods, I will purchase both the Kindle edition and a paperback edition to add to my permanent library.

About the Author
Dean Baker is the cofounder of the Center for Economic Policy and Policy Research in Washington, DC. Before founding the center, he was a senior economist in Washington's Economic Policy Institute. He has authored or edited several books, including The Conservative Nanny State: How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer (2006), Social Security: The Phony Crisis (1999, with Mark Weisbrot), Getting Prices Right: The Debate Over the Consumer Price Index, which won a Choice book award as one of the outstanding academic books of 1998, and Globalization and Progressive Economic Policy (Cambridge University Press, 1998, coedited with Jerry Epstein and Bob Pollin). Dr Baker has also written for a variety of professional and general-audience publications. His work on economic policy issues is often cited in the media, and he is frequently interviewed on television and radio. Dr Baker has also testified a number of times before Congressional committees. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan.

Robert Pollin is Distinguished Professor of Economics and Codirector of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has served as a consultant on energy and the economy for a wide range of organizations and institutions, including the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Program (UNIDO), and numerous nongovernmental organizations. He is author of "Back to Full Employment "(MIT Press), also in the Boston Review series, and "Contours of Descent: U.S. Economic Fractures and the Landscape of Global Austerity".

Very insightful

Very insightful book. If only more people would read stuff like this. It offers perspectives from the negative side of the globalization argument that most people are unaware of. Unfortunately at times it does feel one-sided as well, maybe not presenting some of the positives. Nevertheless, facts are facts, and if you want to be informed you have to be aware of them. Maybe pick up another book to balance this a bit :)

Small warning: I believe this is a college textbook more than anything. It is a collection of papers written by various economists around the world. Therefore it can be long, dry, and definitely not light reading. But if you're hungry for information, this is it!

Against the globalisation bogy

In this excellent collection, 37 contributors from around the world study the World Bank, the IMF, the multinational corporations, movements of capital, goods and labour, and the possibilities of national economic renewal. David Felix points out that the financial liberalisation of recent decades has led to slower growth of output, investment and productivity. Mehrene Larudee observes that Mexico, for instance, grew 6% a year with the industrialisation and protectionist policies of 1951-81; when it joined NAFTA, the economy, jobs and wages all shrank. Ha-joon Chang suggests that workers in multinational corporations have a far stronger bargaining position than employers make out. These firms often threaten to move, but rarely do. They have high sunk costs in physical plant, infrastructure, subcontracted production networks and services, skilled workers, local knowledge. Workers can take control of our workplaces, industries and countries. We can impose capital controls and reinvest the wealth we create in productive industry. `Globalisation', like the idea of God, is a ghost to frighten us. Eban Goodstein proves that protecting the environment does not destroy jobs, contrary to employer propaganda. Gregory DeFreitas argues against an open borders policy, while also opposing racial biases in immigration policy. He notes, "emigration represents a subsidy to the receiving country from the nation that trained them, as well as a loss of valuable talents to their homeland."
Arthur McEwan sums up the book's findings: "The neo-liberal regime that is being imposed on the world economy by the Bretton Woods institutions, the US government and other powerful public and private actors is doing a great deal of damage. It is a regime that harms people in all sorts of ways in the name of economic growth, but it does not even do very well at providing economic growth. The reign of neo-liberalism has not come about as some inevitable historical process, but has been actively constructed by the powerful actors that gain from its establishment. Alternatives exist, and the alternatives tend to work better."

Interesting but not systemetic

I read this book in a graduate class on globalization. The word ��progressive�� in the title refers to the perspective of political economy ie, not the one of neoclassical or neo-liberalist. Arguments from economists, in particular political economists on globalization are somewhat hard to see. Authors focused on side effects of globalization. Their perspectives vary but they can be labeled as the view of ��race to the bottom�� against optimistic views of neo-liberalist. It��s interesting to see what should be done against hard economic trend, globalization from the perspective of losers not winners. And this book has wide coverage from IMF, World Bank to TNCs, Global financial market, inequality. But I should point out some weakness of the book.
1. They doesn��t offer any explanation on what caused the globalization at all. Globalization is presented as mere background to draw their conclusions. Some Marxist schools explained the process of globalization in terms of the diminishing rate of profit. But this book lacks such logics. I think the purpose of this book, offering alternative policy to speed down the process of globalization, drove authors in that direction.
2. My major is not economics but economic sociology. So I had some difficulties to follow all lines of the economists. But it��s not wholly my fault. I have had no such difficulty with economic journals like The Economist. The explanation of economic phenomena which are mainly macroeconomic one, is not kind to reader. I think authors assumed that this book would be read by expert policy makers not by mundane students.

About the Author

Dr. Vicky Katsoni is an Associate Professor at the Tourism Department of the Technological Educational Institute(TEI) of Athens (Greece). She is also teaching at the Greek Open University at the MSc program of Tourism Management. She holds a PhD in Tourism Marketing Management and ICT Applications in Tourism, an MBA and a BA (Hons) in Economics. Having worked for over twenty years as an academic in the tertiary education, Dr. Katsoni is well-versed in academic multi-disciplinary research and has participated in several European and National research projects. Her research interests include tourism marketing, digital tourism, ICTs and tourist development, special forms of tourism and consumer behavior. She has published 9 books on tourism, chapters in edited volumes, and numerous papers in peer-reviewed academic journals. She is president of the nonprofit "International Association of Cultural and Digital Tourism" and member of the editorial board of many scientific journals in tourism and marketing.

Dr. Anastasia Stratigea is an Associate Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Department of Geography and Regional Planning. She is also teaching at the MSc Program of “Environment and Development”, NTUA, Athens. She has a Diploma in Rural and Surveying Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a PhD from National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Her PhD has focused ICTs and Regional Development. She has participated in a number of EU and National Projects relating to planning and policy in the energy, tourism, agricultural and transport sectors. She has published her work in a number of international conferences and journals. She is reviewer in a number of International Journals. She is member of a variety of scientific networks (NECTAR, COST A22, EFONET, SMARTMED etc.). Her research interests are focusing on Sustainable Development, Spatial Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Regional Development and Policy, Tourism and Regional Development,, Sustainable Tourism, Tourism Planning, Smart Tourism, and the Management of Cultural and Natural Resources.��
