In Raising Human Beings, the internationally renowned child psychologist and New York Times bestselling author of Lost at School and The Explosive Child explains how to cultivate a better parent-child relationship while also nurturing empathy, honesty, resilience, and independence.
Parents have an important task: figure out who their child is--his or her skills, preferences, beliefs, values, personality traits, goals, and direction--get comfortable with it, and then help him or her pursue and live a life that is congruent with it. But parents also want to have influence. They want their kid to be independent, but not if he or she is going to make bad choices. They don't want to be harsh and rigid, but nor do they want a noncompliant, disrespectful kid. They want to avoid being too pushy and overbearing, but not if an unmotivated, apathetic kid is what they have to show for it. They want to have a good relationship with their kids, but not if that means being a pushover. They don't want to scream, but they do want to be heard. Good parenting is about striking the balance between a child's characteristics and a parent's desire to have influence.
Now Dr. Ross Greene offers a detailed and practical guide for raising kids in a way that enhances relationships, improves communication, and helps kids learn how to resolve disagreements without conflict. Through his well-known model of solving problems collaboratively, parents can forgo time-out and sticker charts, stop badgering, berating, threatening, and punishing, allow their kids to feel heard and validated, and have influence. From homework to hygiene, curfews, to screen time, Raising Human Beings arms parents with the tools they need to raise kids in ways that are non-punitive and non-adversarial and that brings out the best in both parent and child.

"This book helped me realize I wasn't alone in the mistakes I've made as a parent...and made me hopeful about the changes I can make in my parenting style and in how I interact with my kids. Whether your child is 5 or 15, the approach will elicit the type of communication, collaboration, and relationship that you want to ultimately have with your child. Dr. Greene's writing style is so easy to follow and relate to...he's not preachy or arrogant...he provides relevant information that can be used immediately...and he identifies with both the parent and the child. He provides lots of examples and advice that everyone who has kids will be able to identify with. I've often told my son that this is his first time being a teenager and this is my first time parenting a teen...that I'm learning as I go and there are many things that he and I have to navigate together. I'm far from perfecting this, but I'm a much more collaborative parent than I used to be...I've seen the aftermath of doing things the other way."Parent, Arlington, Virginia

"This practical guide is a powerful tool to support the development of mindsight—how we know our own mind, connect with others, and respect differences. Collaborating with our children and teens is an important skill Ross Greene inspires us to acquire to help our kids learn the lifelong capacity to problem solve, be empathic, and become more insightful. Filled with captivating stories and clear steps, Raising Human Beings will help you raise thoughtful and resilient individuals."—Daniel J. From the Author
"I wrote Raising Human Beings because it's quite clear that all kids -- not merely those who are behaviorally challenging -- benefit from being involved in the process of solving the problems that affect their lives and learning how to work toward mutually satisfactory solutions. And because I've been really concerned about societal trends that have been to the disadvantage of our kids and caused many kids to focus a lot more on me than on we. The problems that affect us all are going to require that we resolve them in ways that are for the collective good rather than solely for individuals. So I'm really excited that this book will be released in August, 2016." -- Ross Greene

Imagine if all the world's children were raised by parents who helped them become problem-solvers
By Nora McNamara
I am such a fan of Dr. Greene's work and writing, and have long recommended "The Explosive Child" and "Lost at School" to the Psychiatry residents and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows in the department where I work, because the way Dr. Greene thinks about children (and talks about and to children) is very much in line with how I think about and talk about and with children. I have been waiting for this book, which finally brings Collaborative and Proactive Solutions theory and practice into the realm of everyday parenting, so that all parents (not just the parents of children with challenging behaviors) can help all children deepen their capacities for empathy, understanding the effects of what they say and do on other people, working with others to find just and peaceful solutions to problems, and being able to really hear and understand another's concerns. Imagine if all of the world's children were raised by parents who helped them become problem-solvers: we wouldn't need wars, or police, or jails. We'd have these New Children working together to find ways to make life better for everybody, and for our planet as well. Imagine how wonderful this election season in the US would be, if instead of the nasty name-calling and fear-mongering, we were actually hearing fascinating ideas each party had to make life easier here for everybody. I've already recommended this book to my friends and colleagues and parents of children that I work with. I can give this work my highest recommendation for anybody. This would make the perfect baby shower gift for new parents, and the perfect gift for any of your parent friends who have confided in you about any kind of struggles they have had with their children. This work also fits beautifully with any family who is interested in or is already using Montessori principles at home, as this approach like Montessori does not rely on bribes, punishments, or "good jobbing". This book is a gem.

This book points to a new more courageous approach to protecting children.
By David Cooperson MSW,MA,LCSW
Dr Greene's book courageously discusses an issue that is often in denial. He deals with the very negative often life long consequences of physical punishment to children that he states is proven over and over again by science to be dangerous and how US laws fall far short of protecting the most vulnerable of us, our children. Case in point he brings up is that in 19 US states it is legal to physically "punish" school children usually with paddles. Over the past few years Congress has rejected several bills to stop this practice which this book bravely discusses. Even currently a bill is is being ignored. There are injuries, too often serious, that occur in disproportionate numbers with autistic, disabled, and black male school children. So his book brings front and center this issue which is a civil rights violation. He does not shy away from the fact that corporal punishment of children even at home is a serious problem as well which is denied too often as well. His book is a call for other authors to tackle this issue as well. it is refreshing for an accomplished author to deal with a problem that frankly is too often overlooked even by many experts in the field.
