a great read on a little known unit

I really appreciate the authors work on little known waffen ss units. The books seems to be well researched and put together. Unit training and organization is well done. I wish there was more combat action in this book, but alas these units didn't see much action before being absorbed into the 17th ss panzergrenadier division.

Another good read from this series

book shows two german S.S. brigades in training and their deployment to normandy to make up loses suffered by one particular german division. The training and operation conducted by both units is shown. Plenty of pictures and battle field reports is covered.

Just a story without documentation

This is a only a story. I do not have the option to award “No Star” and also to write my review.
There are no citations for any assertion in this short book. Only three works, in German, are generally "Referenced" at its end where citations should have appeared. The story is larded with minutia. So, it's a view of the forest from its inside.
Generally, the essential points are that the 49th SS Panzer Grenadier Brigade entered France in mid-August 1944. It had been hurriedly deployed for a German defensive line along the Seine River southeast of Paris to face the rapid advance of Patton's Third Army. The brigade was overrun in a flank attack. It was absorbed by the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division in its retreat from western France [to occupied France east of the Moselle River near Metz].
An example of the author's story-telling is found at p. 42. He tells that, on orders of the German Army High Command and for the purpose of deceiving the enemy, the brigade's title was "dramatically upgraded . . . to the 26th SS Panzer Grenadier Division". He then gratuitously, and without citation to any authoritative, non-German source, offers the self-confusing conclusion: " Perhaps, surprisingly, this deception seems to have fooled the Allied intelligence."
History tells the brigade "seems" to have been routed by the American Army: By only two combat teams of 5th Infantry Division, XX Corps, Third Army, on 26 August 1944. "XX Corps, Its History and Service in World War II", at p. 90.
